Washington, Oct. 27.—It is thought
that the silver men will not seek to ob
struct the course of the Voorhees hill in
the house should it he seat over from the
senate as a substitute for the Wilson bill.
Mr. Bryan, the Nebraska silver cham
pion, said when the question was put to
him that there had been, no consultation
among tho silver men and ho did not
know wha; lie would do. Mr. Pence, bi
Colorado, said:
“How can you obstruct anything un
der tho rules here. There Is no freedom
debate in the house; that much I’ve
\ it^ued since coming here. If necessary
to ft* are prompt action, the committee
on rules will report an order for a vote.'
Representatives would like to adjourn
this week if possible, and the speaker
and the rules committee will do all in
their power to bring this about, if the
matter comes within their jurisdiction.
But adjournment does not rest upon the
silver hill alone. The senate must first
dispose of the McCreary bill to amend
and modify the Geary act before the ad
ministration will accede to an adjourn
ment. But that bill can be acted upon
in the senate while the house disposes of
the silver question. Congress may ad
journ if the senate so wills, and if both
bodies earnestly pursue the purpose
which prominent members of each ex
press an adjournment of the extra session
is not only a possibility but a probability.
Everybody is very tired and ready tc
quit and come back again in regular
session with a strong resolution to dc
better.
Mr. Catchings, of Mississippi, mem
ber of the committee on rules, said that
he didn’t expect the tariff bill to be
ready for consideration until about Dec.
1, and that there was no use keeping the
members here after the silver and bank
ruptcy bills are out of the way.
Itdi gener^fy believed that both these
measures can be acted on in the house
by the end of next week, so that adjourn
ment may come about Nov. 3 or 4.'—'
