A Man Wlu» Killed Another Fire Veers

Galveston, Nov. 24.—John R. John
ston, alias John Comer, who walked into
tho headquarters of the chief of police,
seeking protection from parties, who, ho
claimed, were trying to ‘"gong" him,
later made a full confession of having
killod Jim Wall at a coentry dance,
four miles south of Dawson, Ga., in
1883. The killing occurred it a country
ball, winch Johnston attended with a
young lady. While she was dancing nho
was rudely tripped up and thrown to the
floor by a younger brother of Jim Wall.
Johnston rerouted the indignity to tho
young lady and was invited out by
young Wall, who sai l he would give any
satisfaction lie desired. When they got
into the yard, friends surrounded them,
end the matter was amicably adjusted.
Shortly after this Jim Wall appeared
at tho dance and id3 brother told him
what had happened. Jim said Johnston
would have to refract or he would lull
him, and at onto went in search of John
ston, whom he met coming in the gate
with a party of friends. Jim Wall ap
proached Johnston in h tinea;cningman
ner and demanded an apology tor tho
affront he had placed upon his broth* r.
Johnston replied that the matter had
been amicably settled and that no apolo
gy v;as neceisevv. Jim said ho would
have to apologia or be wou ld kill him.
John*ton refused. Jim Wall threw his
hau l down on •his revolver in l:is hip
pocket. As lie was in Hie act of draw
ing the weapon Johnston whipped out
his revolver anil shot Jim through tho
heart, killing him instantly.

$5.0«0, being the balance unpaid of a

stolen fro u Baird by a lady with whom
he had relations. Baird, it is alleged,

schedule of the new tariff bill. The
measure provides for the admission free
of duty of nil wools and hair of the cam
el, goat, alpaca and other lilco animals,
and ot wool and liair on the skin, top
waste and other wastes and rags com
posed wholly or in parr of wool, and also
repeals what are known as compensatory
duties on woolen goods an t reduces tho
ad valorem duties on such goods.

MORt OFFICERS ARRESTED.
That Knoxville Train Robbery the Cause
of Another Sensation.
Knoxville, Nov. 24.—A sensation has
been created here by the arrest of Chief
Atkins, Lioutenant Hood and Sergeant
Hicks, of the local police department.
They were charged with being accesso
ries to the killing of Will Smith, the
young mau who acted as a decoy for the
officers in the Knoxville and Ohio ex
press robbery case.
Smith was shot presumably by Bar
ney Quinn, the officer who engineered
the case. The officers named accompa
nied Quinn on the expedition to capture
young Gerding, the instigator or the
robbery. They took part in the desper
ate fight in the express car.
The warrant was sworn out by Smith’s
father. The men were arraigned before
a justice of the peace and asked for a
continuance. They were placed under
a $5,000 bond each to appear in court on
Dec. 1.

Denver, Nov. 24.—Mrs. Hallie Cald
well, aged 30, and Annie Jones, aged 18,
with a party of male companions, visited
an opium den here and Mrs. Caldwell
became unconscious from the effects of

Lonisana, through her attorney general,
Huzin, instituted suit against L. A.
Gourdain and others doing business un
der tho name of J. K. Morgan, and tho
Louisiana Doan Company here, (fraudu

cessors of tho Louisiana State Lottery
company and selling tickets iu different
sections based upon the drawing of tho
Louisiana State Lottery company, and
obtained judgment against defendants,
restraining them from publishing or
selling such tickets either in or out of
the state.
Hazing: Stndrnts Fined.
Trenton, Nov. 21.—Herbert W. Fitz
gerald, of Pennsylvania, and William
H. Fulpor, of Flemington, two of tho
seven Princeton students indicted for
assault and battery for hazing Robert
Leopold, a fellow student, appeared in
court here and pleaded non vult to the
charge. They were each fined $100,
which was promptly paid and they vr«. :o
released, but not until Judge Woodruff
had given them a severe reprimand. He
said that their conduct had been dis
graceful and illegal.

St. Locis, Nov. 24.—Louis Horchitz,
until recently local manager for D. Ap
pleton & Co., the New York publishers,
was arrested at his home in Louisiana,
Mo., Sunday night. At the time of his
arrest he was sitting at the bedside of
his dying wife. Horchitz has been in
dicted for the embezzlement of $201. He
says the firm owed him salary and com
mission at the time of his discharge and
he retained the money to pay himself.
Horchitz gave bail and hurried back to
bis wife.
Rht« They Lynched Him?
Frankfort, Ky., Nor. 24.—Albert
Berry, who has been confined in the pen
itentiary awaiting trial for murder, has
mysteriously disappeared and has either
escaped or is hiding about the prison.
Berry killed a peddler in Hock Castle
county about two months ago, and was
brought here for safe keeping. Several
attempts were made to lynch him on
the way here.
Found Cochran Guilty.
Philadelphia, Nov. 24.—-The trial of
Henry S. Cochran, late chief weigher of
the Philadelphia mint, took place before
Judge Butler and a iory in the United
States court. Cocltfan’s counsel made
no defense, and a verdict of guilty was
rendered by the jury, without leaving
the boxs

ed by a lawyer in the trial, was acquit

Chicago, Nov. 24.—A pair of genuine
African kings are in town. The elder of
the two, A. B. Jowett, is a native of the
island of Sheribro, off the coast of Sierra
Leone. The other is Momolu Massaqnoi,
king of Jabacca and heriditary prince of
ten tribes. Prince Jowett has sacrificed
his kingdom for Christianity, but it is
his intention to return to Africa with Iris,
kingly neighbor and reclaim his own
land. Together they will form a federa
tion and spread the gospel by degrees.

Washington,Nov. 24.—The Kearsarge
has" sailed from Boston to Newport,
'hero she will take on torpedoes and
then go to New York for repairs. In tho
latter part of the week, it is understood,

later in the winter by the San Francisco.
It is said that her trip has no special
significance. Commander O. F. Heyer-
man will succeed Commander Crowen-
shield in command of her.

igliau, better known as the “Khan,'
