Atlanta, Dec. 21.—After G2 years of apparent upright, honest living, and oc cupying positions of trust in both relig ious and secular institutions, and, during all his business career, without a whis per of doubt as to his integrity, Charles Arnold, a few days ago, died and was laid to rc*t; and Atlanta mourned tho lots of an Honored and esteemed citizen. Bat scarcely had tho sod settled upon the casket that held his remains when St. Philips Episcopal church of this city, through its proper officers, discovered that there was a discrepancy in the ac counts of their treasurer, and that official was the late Charles Arnold, deceased. 'Investigation of his assets followed, and about enough cash was found in his safe to square the shortage and the mat ter was about to pass unnoticed when, in examination of his accounts with the Georgia Hedge company by an expert who li?ul been put to work on the books revealed a startling state of affairs. Mr. Arnold was tho secretary and treasurer of the concern. The report of the ex pert showed that checks had been raised; bills tampered with after approval by the president, and tho books badly muti lated. The big ledger of the Georgia >.Hedge company was found to be in very bad shape, with a sharp knife, many loaves had been cut out and were missing. What they contained can only bo con jectured. Many erasures were also dis covered on tho book. It was found that Mr. Arnold had failed to post into the ledger a large number of items chargea- blo to himself. In all a shortage of $1,011 was shown by the books. Exact ly $500 of this was earned by raised checks. The bank account, as kept by Major Arnold on the ledger, showed a balance in favor of the Hedgo company of 522. Tlio bank book kept by the bank showed the balance to be only $22. The discovery of this shortage causes the inquiry to be made, are the books of the other institutions in which he held positions of responsibility and trust laden with tho same story of false bookkeep ing? One turned up in the hands of a gentle man who had every trust and confidence in Mr. Arnold. This gentleman was Mr. Joseph Kingsbeny. Immediately after he heard of the frauds discovered in the books of the Hedge company he searched through his checks, several of which had passed through the hands of Major Arnold. He had signed a check in Major Arnold’s favor for $75. In looking through hia checks Mr. Kingsberry found this check in a much different shape from what it was when he signed it. The check was originally written in Major Arnold’s handwriting and called for $75. By adding tho two words “two hundred” in front of the $75 the value of the check was increased al most fourfold. It had entirely escaped Major Kicgsberry’s notice until his at- • tention was called to it by the discov- i erics in tho Hedge company’s accounts, j It is also charged that Major Arnold I had used Captain James R.
