5 THE WAYCkOSS HERALD, SATURDAY, JANUARY 6. 1894. THE FIGHT MAY-FAIL. The Duval Athletic Club Hunt ing a Way of Escape. THEY WAHT A NEW AGREEMENT. A DETERMINED BAND. IT If the City of Jftck*o»viIIe Dots Not Afford rolioo JTotrction the Club Will Perhaps Pile a Salt for Dnmagi s, mid Tliey Think They Hare Some Very Good Ground* for Their Action. Jacksonville, Fla., Jan. 4.—Manager Cow tie ii, of tho Duval c!ul>, has gone to St. Angnstiue to get Mitchell to sign ar ticles allowing the club tho privilege of naming any place where the contest *hall l:e held. If Mitchell signs, so the club says, the contest will be sure to j come off, and not in secret either, as it could not afford such a program. i If Mitchell does not sign the club will I announce the affair to th* world. The passage by the city council of an ordi nance licensing glove contests, tho club claims, gives them a case for damages against the city, if the city does not give police protection to stop any interfer ence with tho tight. This is a new* phase of the caso. NORTHERN OBJECTS. lie Si»y» There Can lie No Prize Fight in Calhoun, (fa., Jan. 4.—One hundred j mashed men were in town Monday night, i They came strictly on business, accom- J plished it and departed. They met with no interference to speak of, and it ia lucky that they did not. for they were strong enough to overcome any ordinary tow’n force. The visit grew out of a raid which deputy marshals made on the moon shiners, 16 miles from here. The depu ties lest here Sunday night, took a long ride in a back over tho rongh mountain roads and reached the neighborhood of the stills, up among the picturesque Manchester Has Now Become a Port of Entry. The governor said that if there w'as the slightest trace or shadow of a law applying to prize fighting he w’ould en force it. Ho says he will not allow’ the matter to go even as far as the governor of Florida has done, bnt if there is much more talk heard he will cause the arrests of those taking part in the affair. Persons W’ho thougnt they could bring iff the fight have been confident for sev eral days because the legislature refused to pass a hill introduced forbidding prize-fighting. It was thought this meant that those who are opposed to the affair taking place in the state were un able to stop it. 4 According to Governor Northen and a number of lawyers the reason the legis lature refused to take any action was that the law on the statute books was considered sufficient. A New Prison for United State* Prisoner* Askc«l for by Atlanta. Atlanta, Jan. 4.—An important doc ument, proceeding from the United States court for the northern district of Georgia, has been transmitted to Wash ington city. The document relates to the establishment of a United States prison in Atlanta for the accommoda tion of federal prisoners in the southern territory. From the urgent manner in which the erection of a prison isj urged by tho grand jury—the fact that a general bill providing for the location of a prison in the south has already passed—and the further fact that Atlanta is the most convenient and available situation for a prison m this section of the country—it is highly probable that the petition will be granted. In addition to the i>lea of the grand jury, addressed to tho congress of the United States, through the congressman from this state, Colonel L. F. Living ston, special petitions will be sent oy Judge Newman, District Attorney James, the clerks of the federal court, the postmaster, the commissioner of the internal revenue and the United States marshal.
