can leaders in tho senate nro preparing
to push their propositions for tho admis
sion of Arizona and New Mexico as one
state, an;l tho union of Utah to Nevada.
Mr. Platt, of Connecticut, is in charge
of the matter. Political oil vantage is
their object. But this is disguised un
der the claim-that tho three territories
as constituted are not entitled,to indivi
dual statehood.
Tho majority of tho senate committco
on territories is likely to go slowly in
disposing of theso questions. Tho bilb
relatiug to the territories will not bo
taken up for several weeks, and full in
vestigation of tho wholo subject will bo
made. One feature of the question like
ly to have much weight is lhat the con
solidations proposed wonld create two
states of such vast area that serious in
conveniences would arise in tho transac
tion of business. Arizona and Now
Mexico together would make a a. to
almost as largo os Texas, and with only
the most meagre railroad facilities as
yet, the people wonld find it difficult to
communicate with each other. The
same is true of Nevada and Utah taken
together.
The Democratic leaders have arranged
no programme. They are in full sympa

But the fact that the Republicans hare

to have started in tho coal room on tho 1
north side, in the basement. It was ]
burning vigorously inside when tho tire- j
men arrived, and tho d imes reaching (
the interior of the theater itself, had ;
shot up through and along tho balconies '
and v.vre bursting through the roof.
! Several heavy explosions took place be- ]

I playing an engagement there, is not
! known. The whole theatre, from base-
1 ment to gallery and from lobby to stage
; was soon afire and doomed,
i At 3 o’clock, tho entire center of tho
j playhouse was fairly burned out. also
the large G-story Buffalo brick building,
owned by Harvard college trustees on
the northwest comer of Washington
street and Hayward place, and tho
building occupied by tho Briant & Strat
ton Commercial school on the other side
of tho theater on Washington street, and
R. T. Almy & Co’s retail clothing houso
on the comer of Washington and Essex
streets, wero for a time in imminent
danger.
Tho only one, however, in which the
flames gained a footing was a 4-story
brick structure adjoining the scenery
room of tho theatre and formerly occu
pied as a Residence by John Stetson and
which is now occupied by the Globe
theatre cafe and tho club room of the
Massachusetts Yacht club.
The building was badly damaged by
fire and smoke. The roof of the theater
fell in at 1:45. The work of the firemen
was hindered for a time by trolley wires.

will make some delay absolutely neces
sary. It is highly probable, therefore,
that whatever the result may be in re
spect to legislation on the subject, no
new state will be admitted upon terms
that will enable her to participate in the
business of this congress.
