Washington, Auk. 10.—It is sairt
that the house conferes* went into the
morning's conference with their posi
tion somewhat stiffened by a message
received from the White House. When
adjournment was taken at the last ses
sion there was a verbal agreement that
should Is* rMnred to wrifibg and signed
in the morning. If was that Iron ore
should be fm* and eoal to be taxed at
40 cents per ton—the senate rate—for
five years and then made free. Sngar
is no longer a snhject for contention
This agreement was taken to the White
House and submitted to Mr. Cleveland
for his approval. This information is
given by a gentleman of sncli standing
that there is no reason to doubt its «
thority.
According to him, the president w
pleased that the house had secured free
iron ore, but greatly displeased to learn
that the house conferes had given their
consent to leaving a duty on <*>al.
Mr. Cleveland is said to have urged
the house conferes to hold out a little
longer in the hope that they might se
cure both coal uud iron free.

Washington, Ang. 10» — Russia is
pUnning a coup d'etat. It will take
place if the plans do not fail, in Corea,
and be one of the last events of the pres
ent war between China and Japan. It
will consist in Russia occupying one of
the desirable ports of Corea and estab
lishing sovereignty over it. Informa
tion to that effect has been received by
one of the legations here. It is pro
nounced of a most authentic character,
and leaves no doubt in the minds of the
recipients oto its trustworthiness. ,Tlie

for a southern port which shall be
open to her commerce throughout the
year. The only port Russia now has on
her eastern shore is closed during a part
of the year by the rigors of winter.
The plau is not of recent birth. Ac
cording to this information, Russia <*on-
ceived the idea of seizing some port in
Chorea over a year ago. To make her
attempt successful an opportunity like
the present was necessary. Wairing for
a chance to present such an opportunity
would involve the loss of too mncli time.
An opportunity must, therefore, lie
made. If the Russian ambassador to
Japan, who—by the way, is considered
the ablest diplomat in the service of the
czar—would divulge his secret opera
tion^ of the past year, the incubation
whicu hatched this war would be found
to have been assisted quite as much (if
not more) by the warmth of tlie Russian
bear as by the heat of the dispute be
tween Cliiua and Japan.
This information is believed to be in
the possession of the state department
here-also, but the officials are dumb on
the subject. It is pretty safe to say,
however, that tlw> administration be
lieves that but for Russian intrigue the
present war would not have conn* to
pass. According to the information re
ceived during flu* morning by the lega
tion in question, the war may be ex

Buzzard’s Bay,- Aug. 10.—The pub
lication of the Chicago story that Jhree
secret service men are here to protect
Mrs. Cleveland and her children has ex
cited the liveliest interest among resi
dents.
Three men had been seen at Gray
Gables, and it was believed that they
were employed to complete the interior
decoratious'and to make changes upon
the cottage, Mrs. Cleveland having ex
pressed a desire to personally superin
tend the work.
. The alleged detectives remain quietly
at the Gables, /usually entirely out of
view from the approaches. Only one
of them has appeared in the village.
Statements that they fol'ow Mrs.
Cleveland and the children aliout are
hardly correct, at least nothiug o*: the
kind has yet been obs rvod by ‘ pub
lic. During tlie past" wee’; Mrs. Cleve
land has rejienteiliy driven to the vil
lage, accompanied only' by Nolan, the
family coachman, and a maid.
The Cleveland babies are driven out
nearly every, day. b" their coachman,
usually attended bv one and sometimes
two maids. The alleged defectives have
not been seen near the team in either
ease, nor upon the Bourne road either
in advance or'behind in the Cleveland
carriage.
