THE WAYCROSS HERALD, SATURDAY, JULY 27, 1895,
plant system flyer.
Fast Time Made Bj a Train Behind
Time Mondajr.
The Plant System people are talking
about a run of one of their trains from
Thoninsville to Savannah last Monday.
According to the figures given out by the
authorities of the road the train was
certainly a flyer. The fast runner was
train No. 58. It left Thomasville last
Monday morning at 4:30 o’clock, two
hours and three minutes late.
It made twenty-seven actual stops and
three Blowups en route. It ran the 201
miles in two hundred and nine minutes,
actual traveling time. Passengers aboard
the train were at a loss to know what all
the fast running was about. The engin
eer knew his business, though, and pull
ed the Jt.**in in in good shape after
of the finest runs ever made over the
Plant Svatem tracks.—Savannah Press.

Waycross is a good place for a Sound
Money rally and the Herald suggests
that our peoj.lt* think over and discuss
the matter. Situated as we are, an
mense crowd can be brought here at
short notice. It we could get Hoke
Smith, Turner, when lie is strong enough,
and perhaps duBignon, it might do great
good. What do you say to it, gentlemen?

A Birthday Present.
The senior editor of the Herald is —
years old to-day, and the beautiful gold
chain which he so gracefully wears
around his classic neck, is a birthday
present from the most charming lady in
Waycross. The lady is single, and her
name—but no matter; other parties will
investigate that part of it.
Now Is Your 'Film.
We have for sale to.'cash purchasers,

la Summer, When the Day* Are Long.
Hot everybody in fortunate enough to
go away in the hot weeks to the moun
tains, or the seashore, or the lakes, or
across the ocean. A very large propor
tion of the community, those among its
very best and most useful members, too,
must stay at home and toil and moil all
through the sweltering July and August
days.
Eveu these, however, can be com
paratively comfortable if they know
how to make themselves so. All people
except the dwellers in city apartment
houses can have either a yard or a ve
randa. All people with an eye to the fit
ness of things have long since dusted
and stored away till winter heavy wool
en draperies and hangings of all kinds,
just as they stored away their winter
clothing. Feather cushions, upholstered
furniture, heavy, dusty and hot, will
also be packed away by those who know
the joy, fitness and artistic beauty of
the light cane, bamboo and wickerwork
chairs and sofas and likewise can afford
to buy them. In fact, many persons have
borrowed an excellent idea from the
Japanese and use only the light wicker
work furniture the year around. It
catches neither dust nor disease mi
crobes, and moths do not get into it It
can bo wheeled and moved with the
greatest ease from one place to another.
Every bouse that is a house has a
veranda to it, or if it has not its owner
ivill build one before the summer is
jver. The most beautiful outdoor par
lors are fitted up on the veranda by
means of rugs, tables and the bamboo
chairs and sofas. Best of all, the ham
mock swung across the porch will give
rest to weary bones and brains as noth
ing else will. Hammocks are cheap
now. No farmhouse in the land is so
poor that it cannot afford one. Indeed
the ingenious country boys construct
very comfortable hammocks from old
barrel staves and twine. One like this,
suspended under a spreading tree, with
a rug thrown over it and having a cush
ion for the head, is as comfortable as the
gayest, costliest hammock in the mil
lionaire’s seaside cottage.
No matter how hard or humble your
labor is, after the day’s work is done
take a cooling bath, change your cloth
ing for something clean and light, get
your newspaper, rest in that hammock
or in that veranda parlor and dream
that you are wholly comfortable. You

An innovation will be witnessed at
the Atlanta exposition in the shape
of a bull fight, with a real bull and pic
adors, bundarillas and a matador, who
is supposed to carve the bull in fine
style for the finish. But the Atlanta
authorities are mindful of their Shakes
peare, and the lion that “reared you as
gently as a sucking dove.” There will
be nothing in this Atlanta bull fight to
offend the most delicate*. nerves or the
finest sensibility. T^y-uyilUs horns will
be padded, the peoplexfno stab him and
dig at him will only play that they are
doing so, and he will return to his stall
as lively and healthy as he was when
he emerged therefrom. The design is to
show visitors to the exposition the gay
costumes and graceful movements of
those who conduct the real fighting. So
far as we know, there has never been
one of these sham bull fights anywhere
in the country, and Atlanta thus offers
something new to American sightseers.
The bull fight will take place at the
Mexican village in the exposition
grounds.

Around every magnet is a mysterious
space called the “magnetic field.” An
invention designed to disturb the mag
netic field of a ship whenever it comes
within the magnetic field of another one
on the ocean and to make the disturb
ance plainly manifest on both vessels
has been devised. The field which can
be discerned by the instrument extends
a distance of several miles. The instil
ment, called a magnetic compass, is so
delicate that when another ship comes
within a given distance, say half a doz
en miles, of the one carrying the com
pass the needle is instantly agitated and
moves around to the point on the face
which is in a direct line with the ap
proaching ship. This will prevent col
lisions.
The British East Africa company has
sold its possessions to the English gov
ernment, and that government will at
once construct a railway from the east
coast to the province of Uganda. The Q JJ QRAY, Upholsterer,
new territory which has thus become a
colony of Great Britain covers 1,000,000
square miles in eastern Africa. It has a
coast line of 400 miles and extends in
ward to the Victoria Nyauza, thence
northward to the Congo Free State.
England is going to act on the assump
tion that Africa belongs to the nation
that c:in first put railroads through it.
New York city is to have a botanic
garden at last. There is cne in Washing
ton ; also cne in St. Louis. There ought
to be at least one botanic garden in ev
ery state in the Union. To fully equip
such an establishment would require
$250,000. Rich Americans sometimes
squander nearly as much as that on a
single wedding.
