The Bank of Scotland.
The Bank of Scotland, now 200 years i bloomers?’
old, naturally sought to encourage Scot- :
tish industries, and this is shown iu the j
manufacture of its paper for notes. The :
first largo notes were made in 1096, 20 1
shilling note's, as they were termed, be- !
ing only issued oa April 7, 1704. In -
1729 the kink’s paper was mannfoc- !
tured at Gifforuhall, near Haddington, j
Attendants had to be present in the i
bank's interest, and their account was \
paid by the bank. One item was “ale '
aud bread furnished to tho workmen, :
10s.,’’and another for “drink money to !
servants, £1 17s. Gd.” Tho items are ,
suggestive, although it is possible they
only represented drink money in name. J
In 1735 the bank got its *20 shilling
banknotes made at Collingtouu Mi hi ,
(Coliutcu mill), and there is an “nc- !
cornpt for drink money’’ in connection i
with it. A barber came twice from

The Debsltes In Prison.
If people outside of jail cultivated
their minds and bodies as assiduously as
Eugene V. Debs and his comrades in the
Woodstock (His.) prison do, then they
would soon be so healthy that they
would seldom need a doctor and so wise
that they could tell a statesman from a
demagogue the first time they laid eyes
on him.
A St. Louis newspaper man who vis
ited the president of tho A. R. U. and
his brethren in their “ loathsome bas-
tile” found that it was, strictly speaking,
a training school for the peculiar ideas
of tbo‘prisoners, from which they hope
to emerge victorious. It will be well for
those who are goiug to oppose them to
take at least half the pains they are tak
ing to fix themselves for further strug
gle in their own particular battlefield.
