That Nugget of Gold.
A few days since, old man, West Goos-
by, an honest farmer, who lives near the
city, while raking around in the mud,
sand and gravel, which Mr. Finn has
recently been taking from the artesian
well, discovered a nugget of gold, or
something that looked very much like a
nugget of gold. He exhibited this find
to Mr. Livingston, at the store of Living
ston & Humphreys, who purchased the
specimen for fifty cents. Col. R. C.
Cannon, our efficient city attorney, pass
ing along soon after, was shown the prize
and told the secret. He offered Mr. Liv
ingston one dollar for the nugget, and
after considerable haggling, the trade
was closed, and the colonel became the
happy owner of the valuable find.
Upon being questioned about it, Mr.
Green stated that the '‘nugget” was a
part of the old brass pump which had be
come fastened in the well and which for
some days he had been drilling out. Col.
Cannon states that he sold the “nugget'*
for sixteen dollars, but this part of the
story lacks confirmation.

- Miss Ella Alphonse*Viney is a neat
yellow girl who belongs to the congre
gation of the Rev. George W. Jones, the
likely looking pastor of the Pilgrim
Baptist Mission church of VTilliamsbnrg,
N. Y. The Rev. Jones is indeed very
likely looking. He dresses in the height
of style and wears a mustache with
waxed ends. Sister Ella Alphonse Viney
is a famous worker in Rev. Jones’ Sun
day school. She is the secretary aud
treasurer of the church and a teacher of
the Bible class besides, aud Brother
Jones says she is “so nice. ”
Mbs Viney’s mother was suspicious of
her beloved’ piaster, do she slyly follow
ed preacher and daughter on a Sunday
school excursion and found Ella Al
phonse sitting close beside Brother
Jones. She ordered the girl to “come
away from there right away.”
“I can’t, rna. Honest, I can’t,” re
plied Ella Alphonse.
Then the Viney woman had Brother
Jones arrested for hypnotizing her
sweet and innocent daughter, Ella Al
