SHORT EDITORIAL PARAGRAPHS
Abe Small’s trial commences in Sa
vannah to-day.
Thirty-five of the negroes who went
to Mexico have died of small pox
near Eagle Pass, Texas.
The calamity sbonter don’t howl as
loud as he did a few weeks since.
He must think he sees “the good

Triplett is still working on that
Tifton road, and the first thing you
know, he’ll get it, and then somebody
will say, “How brave we were to kill

THREE HUNDRED KILLED.
Awful Work of Russian Nihilists.
London, Aug. 19 —The Daily News,
will, to-morrow, puolish a dispatch from
Trieste saying that the newspapers there
report that an explosion occurred to-day
at the artillery barracks at Toola, capital
of the government of that name, in Rus
sia. Three hundred persons are said to
have been killed, including many officers.
The barracks are a heap of ruins.
An examination into the cause of the
explosion led to the discovery that the
barracks had been undermined every
where. Many arrests have been made
of persons suspected of being implicated
the outrage, which is aupposed to have
teen the work of nihilists.
South Georgia not Crazy on Silver.
A North Georgia free silver newspaper
is quoted as saying that ‘‘as a result of
the gold standard there are in South
Georgia sixteen mortgages to one mule.”
We do not believe there are in any part
of Georgia, north or south, sixteen mort
gages to one mule, but if there are, it
would be 9afe to assert that the mule is
in the hands of a 16 to 1 free silverite,
and that he is looking for an opportu
nity to make the mortgage and mule ra
tio 17 to 1. The census report shows
that there are fewer mortgages in South
Georgia than in any other section of the
state, and when the time to vote comes
it will be shown that South Georgia is
comparatively free from the silver craze.
—Savannah News.
The fear that Lon Livingston would
invade the 2d district in the interest
of free silver, has almost made Hen
ry McIntosh a sound money man
If a visit from Lon would complete
the reform, we say, let him go.
The Atlanta Exposition is to have
its Ferris wheel, but in this case it
will be kuown as the Phoenix wheel.
It will be 125 feet in diameter, rest
ing upon the highest part of the Mid
way, fully Go feet above the lake level,
carrying passengers nearly 200 feet
above the general elevation of the
lake and the plaza, and giving a com
manding view of all the buildings,
the grounds and the surrounding
country. The wheel will be lighted
by electricity at night. Its capacity
will be about 250 people at each rev
olution.
Unlucky Family,
Hr. and Mrs. Charles Hitesman, an
aged couple cf Elkhart, Ind., have been
peculiarly unfortunate with their chil
dren. Twenty years ago their son John
was accidentally burned to death. In
1889 William was killed in a runaway.
In a few months, James, while return
ing from a donee, jumped from a train
at a era-sing and received injuries from
which ho died in a few hours. A few
months later another son, George, was
injured by the explosion of a rotator in
a paper mill, was confined to bis bed
for a year and left a cripple for life.

A Helled Crane.
The belled buzzard story has been
changed a bit. From Pike county, on
the border of the Big Sandy, comes a
tale that a large white crane- with a
small bell attached to its neck lias fre
quently been seen of late by farmers.
Several attempts have been made to kill
the feathered cliimer, but it seems tc
bear a charmed life, and all bullets
glance off its glossy coat.—Louisville

HOME RULE IN CUBA.
The illuminaut of the future is either
electricity cr the new gas, acetylene,
probably both. Later experiments with
acetylene provo all the merit at first
claimed for it A given volume of it
will produce 4 times as much light as
the same volume cf coal gas from the
most approved burner. The acetylene
throws off only four-fifths as much car
bonic acid as the coal gas does and only
one-sixth as much water. Finally it re
quires in combustion only half so much
oxygen as the coal gas does. It will be
seen, therefore, that it poisons the air far
less than ordinary illuminating gas does.
To all these advantages is added the fact
that the acetyleno can be made more
cheaply than the coal gas. Apparently
the gas companies will therefore consult
both their own interests and those of
their customers by initiating at once ex
periments looking to the substitution of
acotyleue for ordinary coal gas. The new
gas can be liquefied readily, and with
proper care can be conveyed in this form

The Cubans have formed a provi

The serious question which Is now
confronting tho Cubans is as to the best
course of procedure in case they main
tain their supremacy by arms. There
are some disadvantages in the plan of a
proposed republic. There is a very
largo negro population in Cuba, and
with a general enfranchisement there
might be a negro supremacy. Cuba as
an independent republio would not
necessarily mean the dominance of
Cubans of uumixed blood.—Syracuse

The electiou of a provisional repub

metamorphosis. The Cuban party has
gained steadily and at all points from

oppressive power of Spain to this formal
declaration of independence and of
autonomy.—Chicago Inter Ocean.
