CUBA I XDEROTHEK tOSDUWXS.
The Mexican Herald of the City of
Mexico, says that a well informed gen
tleman from Cuba now in Alexieo, de
clares that sboutd Cuba gain her inde
pendence it will require but a tea* years
to restore prosperity—especially as large
sums ot money tu the Uuiievl Sia.es are
only awaiting the realization of Cuba
Libre to be invested in sugar, tooacco,
iron mining, wood cutting and railway
cons.ruction throughout the island.
The disappearance of Spauisu rule
trout Cuba aud the return ot the c>pauish
armies to £pain would undoubtedly be
followed by a tremendous revival of all
kinds of industry in this gem of the An
tilles. Population would pour in from
the United States at a rapid rate, and in
a year or two this richest of all the West
Indies islands would display a prosperity
aud a growth in every direction that
would be phenomenal. The possibiliti<
of development or the promise of inves.-
ments in Hawaii are not to be compared
to the outlooa of Cuba under Cubau or
American control. The latter possession
would be of inestimable value to us,
while l^awaii would be somewhat of
a white elephaut ou our hands. Theie
is no territory near our borueis that
would be as desirable an acquisition as
Cuba, aud iu a feiv years by wise sanitary
measures the health of the island could
be made as good as iu Florida or Louis
iana.
The main objection to annexation is
the oft repeated one that the population
of Cuba is of alow type largeiyand wholly
unfitted for self government. On the
other band, the whites are a brave and
sprightly race and largely outnumber
the negroes. But the point to be remem
bered is that the rapid influx of Ameri
cans and American money would soon
work a revolution in the social and po
litical life of the islaud as well as in the
commercial and industrial fields. In
five years after annexation Americans
would dominate the new territory both
by force of numbers and by the control
of the trade and finances of the island.
If Air. AIcKinley wants to do some
thing to give his administration prestige
aid historical prominence let him ac
complish the independence and then the
annexation of Cuba. It would be a
means of regaining much of the popu
larity which the administration is now
rapidly losing.—Houston Post.
