W«*l roodmaatei of the Plant .System.
Wo were there on time and were pleased to
•boaldea the Captain, several other
prominent railroad men. The object of the
seeding was explained to be tlie post mortem
uf *«U»y-on<: pound ’•Jones” melon* which
the Captain had brought from Alabama on
ice. Tba melon was the largest and finest
w have seen )hb season, and the party did
justice to Its excellent qualities. We spent a
pleasant half an hour with the Captain and
found him a most genial gentleman.
The .intelligence obtains front Lulatou
and other places in Wayne county that thu
fruit season is about over. The same is true
of the fruit in Ware, Pierce am! Charlton
counties; The remainder of the crop \* i :
be small and inferior in quality. A good
opportunity for preserving tlie fruit has pre-
Kntod ilMlI tl.i, season by the abundance
‘ of tbe'erop, and many housewives have
availed themselves of it. There is still some
'.•time left for canning end preserving [teach
es. and at the low prices tlie fruit is offered,
every housewifein this section may afford
to preserve R good .supply for the winter
•. and spring months.

next year on Ms fine plantation at Scriren.
Wayne county. He hg* been giving the
matter some‘consideration and thinks that
he will ppderUke some experiments Cigar
leaf is what the Captain will plant. It is
the Captain’s opinion that his fertile ham
mock lands will produce good tobacco.

The lolloping, by Rev. R. C. Barr,
a repnfablo .writer, is from The
North British Monthly Register for
Marob, -1760:- Early this year (1790)
there was brought to Avignon a
trite litbophagna, or stone eater. Ha
nQti.onl/tayalJoaeed flints an inch
long an4 r adbat#^an inch thick, but
snob other atones as he could re
duce to powder with his teeth, snob
as oommon pebbles, gravel, sand,
eto. Tlie softer stone* he chewed
with his teeth nntil they were te-
dnoed to a sort of paste, which seem
ed very agreeable to this queer crea
ture's digestive apparatus. * * * His
saliva was very corrosive, so much
so that scrubbing compounds would
not olean the spots which were made
byhis spiting on the iron floor.

You find, of course, that the old

Dootor—Well, I find.some traces
of post mortem insanity. v
La wy er—\Vhat do you mean by
that?
Doctor—It is a form of insanity
which is only discoverable after a
man has made a will, and it consists
in a mania for leaving money to
charitable institutions. — London
