OFFICIAL OKItAN OF TlIK CITY OF VAYCHOrf8 AM) OF WAUK AND CHARLTON COUNTIES.
VOLUME XXII
WAYCROSS, GA., SATURDAY, MARCH 8, 1002.
NUMBER
Take Effect Saturday. Gave Worthless Checks Statement Excellent. I Douglas’ Depot Burned.
NO COWS ALLOWED ON THE STREETS IN JACKSONVILLE, FLA., AND WAS AX.
AFTER‘TOMORROW.
Thursday'* daily.
The cow ordinance pasted at the last
meeting of council will be in force
after tomorrow. Several citizens who
are opposed to the ordinance bare
made effort* during the past few days
to have the ordinance repealed, c
least hare It delayed a few days, but
in all probability their efforts will be
unsuccessful.
The Wnjcross Speaking.
Four 01 five years ago, during a heat
ed campaign, the peopl%of Cordele in*
vited Hon. Hoke Smith to come to that
city and make a speech. Mr. Smith
went and apoke to two or three thous*
and people from Dooley and adjoining
counties. When he bad finished speak
ing Col. Leonidas Livingston scrambled
upon the platform to* make a speech in
reply. The audience was divided be
tween “gold bugs” and “silverites,” but
both aides retired at the conclusion of
Mr. Smith’s speech, leaving the impu
dent Leonidas to spesk to empty benches.
The fair-minded people of both sides
knew it was Mr. Smith’s day—the
■ion and the crowds had been worked up
for him—and Liv'mgston was censured
by both for go ng there at that ti
was cheeky, at least.
Last Saturday Hon. Joseph Terrell
had an appointment to speak at Way
cross. His friends had advertised the
occasion and had worked up something
of a crowd. Mr Guerry bad spoken
there a few weeks before without inter
ruption from Mr. Terrell or his friends.
Mr. Guerry had pretty well covered the
state with his speech-making,, having
been on the stump for the past six
months. Mr. Terrell had expressed a
deaire to make a canvas of the state in
hia own behalf. He stated that he did
not earo to enter a joint debate; becauae
he felt certain that it would develop
personalises that could do no good. In
hia speeches, he rapped Mr. Guerry a
little on hit former connection with
railroads, but had aaid nothing half ao
harsh aa Mr. Guerry had aaid of him in
all his speeches. Under all of these
circumstances, it seems that Mr. Gnerry
made a grievlous mistake in going to
Way cross last Saturday. He had a
right to go there, to be an re, but Mr.
Tereell bad not tried to break Into his
crowds, and it was exceedingly dis
courteous 10 him to thrnst himself upon
Mr. Ferrell’s occasionr.
After Mr. Terrell’s speech, and before
Mr. Gnerry had begun his, Mr. Terrell
boarded a train and came tothladty
where be bad an engagement for the
atteruuou. At brat blush, one ought
fell that he should have remained upon
the ground sod made the m>Ht of tbe
situation, but after maturtf reflection, it
can be seen that he in go-ng
along the even tenor of Bs way without
ao much aa recognizing the man who
was ao diicourteous toward him. The
Waycroaa Incident last Saturday will
make friends for Mr. Terrell throughout
tbb part of the state. Hb actions were
those of a grotleman, while thoee of his
opponent were better edited to a Tillman
or a Livingston than to a man oho
eUime for, kimarif tbe finer tod more
delicate iaatiacts —Valdosta Time*.
