An Excellent Test Run.
THE FIREMEN WERE OUT IN 52 SEC.
ONDS AFTER THE ALARM.
From Thursday’s daily i -
Another test run was fcl'ade by the
Waycross Fire Dspnrtment last night,
and the record made was an excellent
one. The alarm was turned in by
telephone at 11 o’clock, when all the
f remen, except Chief Singleton, were
in bed and asleep.] In fifty-two sec
onds from the time the telephone bell
rang, the firemen had dres&d, hitched
up their horses and the hose wagon
was rolling out of the fire station. In
crossing t)icae railroad tracks at the
end of Gilmore street and in front of
the'first National Bank, the wagon
had to be driven slowly, but when
across the last track the horses were
given theirjfull speed up Plant Ave*
nue. The truck passed the corner of
the Phoenix hotel, a distance of one*
third of a mile, in just 2 minutes and 5
seconds after the telephone bell,sound
ing the alarm, had rang.
Last night was the first test run at
night the company has been called
upon to make since the new hose
truck and improved fire harness has
been in their possession. In the day
time when the men are fully dressed,
the horses can be hitched and the
truck will roll ont of fire atation in
from 22 to 30 seconds from the tap of
the alarm bell. The greater part of
52 seconds last night w*r« consumed
by the firemen ip dressing.
Chief Singleton dope some excellent
work in the training the fire horses.
The am*£als seem to find great pletty
ure in their last, runs from the fire
atation, and when a church bell rings,
or the telephone belV la sounded, the

acy after thf .tap.of this belLa chain

indicate that the fire department has
be culled out for practice only. Some-
times this alarm will be rung in the
day time, and drivers of vehicles, es
pecially on Plant avenue, are reques*
ted to drive to one side of the street
as loon as possible. The truck i
ways driven at full speed to a given
point, and to prevent the possibility
of accidents, the streets must
cleared for them.

The? go out with a rush, and usually
the powerful brakes are put on to
keep them from dashing at full speed
across the railroad tracks.
The hose truck is taken out for at
least one practice rnn each day, and
the same method in bitching and
leaving the station is always employ*
ed. Another feature tl at shows the
perfect training of the horses, is visi*
ble in the day time. Sometimes the
horses are allowed to browse in front
of the station. Wnen the alarm bell
it tapped, they will invariably run to
th* door* and back Into their pl-tces
unler harness.

AN INTERESTING BALL 0AME IN THIS
CITY TOMORROW AFTERNOON.
The Blackshear base ball club will
come to Waycross tomorrow for
game which will be played with the
Waycross team at thd grounds near
the passenger depot in the afternoon.
Blackshear has an excellent team, and
as there is a great improvement in the
home team, a good game is expected.
The ladies are especially invited, and
they will be admitted to the grounds
free of charge. A charge of 25 cents
will be made for men and 15 cents for
boys. Tomorrow, col lectors will be
placed at all the entrances to the park,
and no man or boy will be admitted
unless their admittance fee is paid. To-
maintain a good base ball club here, a
large expense is incurred, and charges
must be made at all the games, for the
present at least, to meet this expense.
The Waycross club will in all proba
bility erect a grand stand on the
grounds within the next few days, and
part of the money collected at the
game tomorrow will be used for this
purpose, The public is wanted at all
the games, but they are requested not
to come unless they are prepared to
pay their admission fee.
