Superior Court In Charl ton County—Crops, and other Matters. Superior court convened in Charlton county last week, Judge Ifcrshon presiding,;ahd L;on A. Wilson acting Solicitor. Attor n'd present, Blackshear, Messrs. Nichols & Hitch; Brunswick, Harris, Atkinson & Atkinson; Wnycross, McDonald and Wilsor. Owing to pressing business, we were unable to attend the first day, but put in an appearance on the second and last day. The busine, s of the court was dispatched with rapidity, and court was adjourned on the second day at 2.30, o’clock. Judge Mershon, in taking leave of the Grand Jury complimented tliesn'very highly on the healthy condition of the county, both fi nancially andmorally. The peo ple of Charlton are a wide-awake and : .progressive class; they live in a gco.l country 1 ; and fhey knpw it ;" tticy liave made good crops, and have peace and: .plenty. -Besides the regular rotine of forming, they do considerable business in raising early vegetables to ship to north ern markets. Wc notice that Mr. J. P. Stallings has several acres of English peas already up, and several more just planted. Con siderable business is carried on in rafting timber down tlio St. Ma rys river to Ki g’s ferry and other points, which is quite a source of revenue to those engaged in the business. Game is still plentiful in and around the okefenokee swamp. A party of hunters was out two days last week and killed line deer and feu .'hears. Wild turkey, mid quail abound on every hand, besides fish is plentiful in the streams and arc easily taken— we know of no better field for the sportsman than the banks of the St. Marys river. Messrs.: FIi jh Daniel, of ^jj^jj^fltorneys or the roadj. , Col. Itaybon, Last week wc took occasion to make some references to the letter of Mr. Rnyborn, of Wuvne, in which wo denied his assertion that Wnycross was among the towns in this section that had jist bankrupt and de serted beeauseTYittsSty " ivas - "rot sold here, and some of our friends think we went too far. Perhaps we did, but if so, we did it for the purpose of defending our section and aiding, ail wo could, tlio friends of prohibition in At lanta, against the workings of a powerful whiskey ring. ■ In order that we may show that we are not the only ones in the district who tako exceptions to Mr. Raybbrn’s letter, we pub lish the reply of the Baxley Banner to his charges: The above letter from Mr- Rnyborn we ylip from the Con stitution of the fitli inst. To our mind Mr. Rnyborn lias done a very unpatriotic thing by cry ing down liis county and his section of the country in order to help out a whisky ring two hundred miles away. lie has misrepresented the Third Sena torial district and wc feel called upon to hohl up this letter to his constituents, and to the peo- j pie of Appling, Wayne *und 'Ware, that they may judge as to tlio truth of liis statements. He says one-third of our store houses are closed. This is not true. There is more cap ital invested, in the mercantile business now than ever before iii the history of Baxley. Ho says real estate is worth little or nothing. VThis i« not true. Real estate in Baxley has advanced one hundred per cent, since lo cal ' option has been in force. We do not claim that local op tion jigs done all this, but it lias helped. He says laborers have sought other homes. True, somo have gone to other places, but two come where one goes. There arc in Appling coun’v seven large saw-mills and about fortv turpentine stills which re quire a great many laborers. He says capital. has sought other towns. Perhaps a -few whisky meqjiavc gone to other places, but we freely give them up. Wc regard tho entire letter ns an unjust rtfloetion upon our county and people, and Mr. Ray- born \rill be tired of this matter before ho is dono with it, and our people will not- soon, forget tnis one act of his patriotism. We learni that the citizens of Wavcross and Blackshear have denied iu the most emphatic ivay the assertions made so fajj alsd.lp them.— Yes, Tom, I was thar, certain, an’ I seed you tliar; Massy Wil son, What he used to be ’fore lie was married wus thar; an’ I seed some scandiculcus things unimulcs, and so forth, frum elyfant-.-.to the spyder legged senseleSJ'jdude—the sho Ji>rn-. isbed the -aniinules and clyfant, and sb'foTth',. while the kountry at large supplied the krap of du-dudes.
