Alex. St. Clair Abrams.
Enterprise, Fla., Nov 27, ’85
Editors Headlight—I notice in
your paper of the ISth inst., an
editorial i|> regard to Capt, St-
Clair Abrams, of Orlando, Fla.
You, no doubt, got vour inform,
ntion from a telegram in the
Jacksonville Titnes-Union, sent
by a reporter of the Daily News.
You should have consulted a la
ter issue of that paper which
contained the true facts in re
gard to the affair between Cupt.
St Clair Abrams and one Math
ewg,'the once editor oftlje now
defunct News. I have investi
gated the whole affair, and hud
that although a pistoi, and not a
“little one,” os you stated, was
drawn on Capt. Abrams, instead
of “retreating,” he advanced on
the editor of the now Wlefunct
News, with no weapon except a
horsewhip in his hand, which
would havo been used had it
not been for the interference of
the city marshal, who saved the
editor front a severe flogging.
Capt, St, Clair Abrams is well-
known throughout Florida, not
only on account of his ability as
a lawyer, hut no one over has or
ever Will doubt his courage as a
man. Tiioso .who know him
would gssoon question the cour
age of Leonidas or Uqnibal as
that of S). Clair Abrams. Holms
enemies it is true—who arc «1
ways ready to do him all the
harm they can—-such is the case
witli all great men. I am a
friend to Capt St Clair Abrams,
and dislike to seo an injustice
dono him, therefore, you will
pleasp give this letter the same
notoriety yog did tho infamous
telegram jp regard to that gen
tlomnn, .
Very respectfully,
J. E. Alexander.
F. S—Your paper is widely
circulated through Florida and
is well liked. J. E. A.
We publish tho above with
pleasure, and assure our corres
pondent that we had no desire to
misrepresent the facts in the
case. Tiie editorial alluded to
was merely a news-note, and had
we the remotest idea that we
wore doing injustice bv its pub
lication it would (fever have ap
poured in these columns. We
know no fear, still, tbs Head
light stands ready at any tjmo
to correct an error that injures
friend or stranger.
Satan Rebuking Sin.
A writer to a Radical paper
of Toledo, Ohio, has recently
been giving the world the bene
fit of what he evidently consid
ers a most sapient effusion.
After ventilating himself at
length on the subject of tlio
South —a section which it would
be safe to wager lie has never
visited—he winds up asiollows;
“When the people of the South
will truly and unreservedly ac
cept the result of the war;
cease to harbor feelings of hate
and revenge towards the Repub
lican party; divide on the great
questions of the day that are
agitating the public mind; act
as reasoning and thinking men,
not being governed by their
passions and prejudice; then and
not till then may we hope for
au era of good feeling between
the sections,”
If anything was wanting to
prove that the writer of the
above mentioned letter or essay,
says the Savannah Times, knew
nothing of what he was writin
about this extract amply supplies
the deficiency. The people of die
South accepted, candidly and
Unreservedly, the results of the
war when they surrendered their
arms at Appomalox, and ever
siuoc then they have devoted
themselves to building up the
prosperity of themselves and
their section and so adding to
the wealth and greatness of the
common country. So faros en
tertaining feelings of hate to
wards the Republican party is
concerned, however, the writer
speaks truthfully. The South
does hate and despise most
cordially the Republican party,
and with good reason. Never
lor a moment since the war
ended has that party ceased to
vjllify, malign and traduce tljo
South on all occasions. Fo
menting hate and hostility to
wards our section has been, and
is, the stock in trade of the par
ty, and no falsehood against the
south has over been too mon-
trous for it to repeat and give
currency to. The Republicans
ought to havo learned from the
experience of t|io late war that
when the South is kicked she is
apt to kick back, and kick
hard.

The agitation in behalf qf r>
railroad to connect Southern
Georgia with Middle West Flori

great importance to those sections
of country. Distances are not
of great importance. Tim ques
tion is, how long does it take to
