When some of the Soathern
State Legislatures first began to
give artificial limbs to maimed
ex-Confederate soldiers, or grant
money in lieu thereof, the Re
publicans raised a great howl
about “treason being rewarded
in the South.” The cry did not
have much influence North.
The revulsion of public senti
ment had begun in earnest and
the bloody shirt slogan had lost
much of its power.

circumstances, had trausfered it
to a needy, maimed cx-Confcd-
erate in Luenburg county, Va.
Now a Washington special an
nounces that since that time five
Union soldiers of Watertown
liuvo followed the noble example
of that officer and have express
ed a desire to transfer their pen
sions to injured ex-Coufeder-
ates.
So far not a single Republi
can paper lias had the hardihood
to rise up in indignation and de
nounce the Union veterans for
thus denying themselves in or
der to show their faith in the re
newed harmony of the sections,
