to please themselves. Well, as
we said, the time is near for
happiness witli pic-nickers.
In years gone by we have had
much pleasure at pic-nics, one
incident particularly having left
its lusting impress on our mem
ory.
..The occcasion referred to
dates back to July 4th, 1850,
when the Albany Guards, of Al
bany and the Sumter Light In
fantry, of Americus, were pic
nicking at the Blue Spring,
lour miles east of Albany. The
later company was the guest of
the former, and Albany’s fair
name was at stake in the man
ner of entertainments for theft
visitors, therefore the beauty
and chivalry of the county ami
town vied with' each other as to
who should outstrip in courte
sies^ Musical talent from both
towns was on the ground and
preparations for a grand milita
ry bull bad been made when tlie
4th of July dawned warm and
Idudy—this was tho day that
the gayest of the gay had look
ed for—this was the time when
beauty should cope hand to
hand with the sous of Mars,
and toward the turn of the
day hundreds of people were
present. Tho drilling was over
—the bounteously laden tables
had been robbed of their tempt
ing viands, and a platform with
ample proportions was reared
and the lovers-of torpsechorcan
pleasures wore waiting, with
fondest anticipations, but, be
hold ! tlie wife of an ollicer and
one of the leaders of fashion
was absent, and a messenger
with a conveyance was quickly
dispa died for the missing one.
A Harrisburg, Pa., special
says that news of a strange and
mysterious oceurrdliee at Mil-
lcrsburg. Dauphin county, has
been received liere. On Thurs
day morning there was a jovial
cr-wJ in a hotel at that place
and while they were imbibing
Samuel Mutter entered. Mutter
was well known throughout the
country as a patent medicine
peddler and was about fifty-five
years of age. His wife died iu
the almshouse some time ago,
and since then he has been iiv
iug near this place.
Shortly after Motter entered a
discussion on religious subjects
arose. The sacrament of the
Lord’s Supper was talked about.
Motter became very earnest in
his talk, and finally dared the
men to indulge iu an imitation
of the Lord’s Supper. They
agreed to have it with beer and
bread, and accordingly a glass
was filled with that beverage.
They then knelt in mock humil
ity, and with the beer iu one
hand and the bread in the other
Motter went along distributing
a bite and sup to each.
Suddenly, when he was about
through a strange noise was
heard, and looking up the men
saw a sight that "made their
blood run cold and froze the
marrow in their bones.” As
near as tbe sacred men could
describe it, they declared it was
an immense, ill-formed and foul
beast with great cloven feet,
painted horns and eyes that

men rushed out into the open
air and scattered in every direc
