Panther Boards
Steamboat
While the Henry A. Tyler
was passing Savannah, Tennesee
River, recently, a huge panther
jumped into the river from the
high bank opposite the city,
and made a bold swim toward
the opposite shore. While the
eyes of every one on the boat
were directed to the graceful,
tawny creature making his way
rapidly and easily against the
current, he suddenly changed
his direction -and made a bee
line fur the boat. Anticipating
trouble, tile roustabouts gathered
Solid chunks of coal and awaited
the approach of the beast.
Reaching the guard, which was
low in water in consequence of
a big cargo, he th rew his huge
paws upon it and with a bound
gained a foothold. A fusillade
of big coal chunks struck the
animal in a dozen places,
knocking him in the river amid
iiis savage growls and howls of
pain. Almost immediately the
now thoroughly infuriated heast
again turned, and with a growl
leaped clear out of the water
und landed amid the knot of al
most paralyzed negroes on the
forecastle, where he crounched
fiercely with blazing eyes, look
ing about him, snapping and
ann'ding, whilo Ills long, grace
ful tail slowly swayed to and fro.
At tills nfoment Captain Hill,
who had arrived upon the scene
with a double-barreled sliotliun,
raised iiis weapon and sent a
charge of buckshot into the
panther’s fore shoulders, which
caused him again to leap in the
river, and, with a trail of crim
son blood attaining tbe blue wa
ters behind, the savage king of
the Tennessee jungles rapidly
swam to the shore, disappearing
in tlie dense thicket and under
growth which fringes the bank
at this point. Tho animal was
of a tawny brown, about five
foot long, weighing not less
than 200 pounds.—[St Louis
Globe-Democrat.]
The Jacksonville Times-
Union the other day excited
surprise by editorially publish
ing the simple inquiry, “Should
Senator Jones be paid a salary
for sparging a widow ?” No one
knew at the time what it meant,
but the truth has now come
out. The eloquent Senator has
not Ijeen seen either in Florida
qr in Washington since last
spring. Since that time he has
been in Detroit, Mich. He is in
love with a charming widow,
who twice a miliionarie, resides
there; but she has not yet recip
rocated the feeling, and he has
sworn not to return until ho
wins licr hand. lie has been
in Detroit 220 days, and every
day he has sent to the object of
liis affection a boquet and a
love Utter. All this is very in
teresting aud-iomantic; but, in
the words of the Times-Union,
is it right that he should be paid
five thousand dollars a year for
sparking the widow ?
Truthfully Told.
One of the meanest and most
contemptible things a man can
do, is, when a person is trying
to break off from evil ways, to
club him with his past—drop a
stumbling block of forgotten er
ror in his path or throw in his
face some bitterly-regretted epi
sode of by-gono days. (It
would be enough to stagger the
most righteous person to have
his entire past rise suddenly T>e-
forc him. The best man that
ever lived lias not so good a
past as the Devil, for the' Devil
was an angel of light.) Many a
man who has staned out to do
right has been forced back iuto
tho old ways by taunts and
gibes and^ptffercnces to the life
ho is tiding to forsake.- And,
straivgo as it may appear, these
allusions usually coir.c from
persons whose characters are,
perhaps, no whiter than his
own, but which do not happen
to bo blackened with thq same
particular kind of sin; for the
■nan with tho smutty face is al
ways the first one to mention the
mud on his neighbors clothes
"My hretliern, these tilings
ought so to he.’’ Help the poor
moral cripple out of the ditch of
sin into which he has fallen;
don’t stand on the bank aud
push him back and then tcli
him you knew ho would never
he able to got out.—Live Oak

The Kansas City Times lias
the following very sensible re
marks on the subject of educa
ting children, and contains
some hints which, if generally
observed, might result benefici
ally: Children learn too fast.
They are crammed at school,
forced in social knowledge and
neglected at home. Tho longer
