A new discovery is that, by the simple

THE SWAMP GANG.
Some tea years ago-l wan engaged
with otlietw ia the re-survey for the gov

kansas river. In order that we might run
into creeks and over liars wc were pro
vided with # small steamer called the
Hprite. The crow consisted of captain,
tnate, engineer, fireman, cook and wheels-
man, ami my brother surveyor was a gen
tleman named Mortimer White. The ac
commodation* <w«re rather scant, but we
lived well, and, as is the rule in such
cases, none of us was overworked. We
had time to hunt ami fish, and there were
days when tike steamer** fires were not
lighted atoll, our. lines Wing run by the
aid of the skiff. ,
At that tiiiM- -and: it may still b * the
case—there was a-hartl population along
the Arkansas. U do not refer to the
towns, liut to the xi-ealled hunters, trapr
P«rs and traders a lio made a living along
the rivers, and whose skiffs, rafts and
house boats were encountered half a
dozen times a -day. They were a crowd
of restless Arabs, and if there was an
honest maa among them we failed to dis
cover his presence. On several occasions
attempts were made. to steal our skiffs,
and if r»]ie or chain w as left on the hank
for half an hour unwatched it was spirited
away in a mysterious manner. While
there were some genuine hunters beating
up and down >iho tanks, the great ma
jority of the wanderers were chaps who
hod gone into biding to escape the law,
and they were hard-looking cases.
One afternoon.'while most of the
were fishing in albend half a mile above
the toot, and while those, who remained
with me aboard the steamer were asleep,
I caught sight of ;a villainous-looking
face watching the -steamer from the
bushes. We were* then tied up to the
right-liynd tank, about twenty miles be
low Pine Bluff. While I could see the
fellow through the blinds of my state
room, he oouW not catch sight * of me.
He made u long and.-careful scrutiny of
the steamer, and after a time was joined
by two others. All three had rifles, re
volvers and knives-jind the condition of
hair, whiskers and clothing proved that
they had been hiding for months. They
approached the -steamer within six or
eight feet, looked her over again, and re
tired as noiselessly as they came.
The presence.of the -strangers was re
ported when the crew came - -
having been stoutly -closed up. As the
outlaw withdrew ho fasteued the door
with a padlock, and we heart! him moving
off in the direction offhe steamer. Indigna

Origin of Oats.
De Candolle (gates that oats will per-
d«t longer when sown by themselves
than almost any other plant. The origin
of thc plant h£ locates in eastern Europe
and Tartary. Cota played a less import

than either wheat, barley or rye. An
cient civilization was the product .ofa hot

portant use till the stronger civilization
of northern Europe found them to be a
necessary article of diet. In our own
country, oats stands the third cereal in
importance. The crop of 1884 was 583,-
623,000 bushels, against 135,600,000 in
1844. Over eighty per cent, of the crop
