A Day in Charlton County. \
" Charlton county Superior court
convened last week, and as usual
we went down to sec tlic boys.
Judge Mcrshon was in the chair,
Solicitor General Carter on deck
with the usual number of attor-
nies present. * At ten - o’clock the
shrill voice of Sheriff Robinson
announced that the “Honorable
Superior Court of Charlton coun
ty was in session.”
The Judge headed the van while
wc all marched into the court
house and secured seats looking as
dignified as possible. The usual
ceremony was gone through with
in empanncling the Juries, after
which the docket was handed to
the Judge and before we went
to dinner he had called the last
case on the book. The familiar
sound of the dinner bell was
heard in the direction of Captain
Brboks’ house, and not waiting
for k a second invitation, we were
soon around his table, where
everything that a hungry man
could wish was before us. Large,
fat turkeys, fish, venison, pork,
in fact everything that you could
think of to make up a good din
ner. It was thought that court
would adjourn that evening, but
after mature deliberation it was
decided best to hold over until
next, day at least, or, until the tur
keys and venison was consumed.
The next thing to do was to get
Railroad Ryan to bring in two
negroes charged with riding on
the bumpers of the cars without
leave or license or the consent of
the conductor. The darkies come
clear, however, and the second
day’s work was done.
All began now to make arrange
ments to leave when our Judge
and Bro. Harris sniffed the wind
and thought they could smell a
remnant of the venison, so we had
to leave themj but in good hands,
for anybody that stays with Capt.
Brooks and his estimable lady are
well cared for.
The people of Charlton county
^are sober, industrious citizens and
there is very little work for the
courts to do. The county officers
are diligent in f their duties, effi
cient and prompt, and no offend
er of the law goes unpinished.
It was pur privilege to spend a
nigKt with Ordinary Gibson.—
Owen has a nice little farm, pleas
antly situated home, surrounded
by all the comforts necessary to
make a man happy—an estimable
wife, four or five pretty children,
and a ficc dog. Mr. Gibson is
paying some attention to poultry
raising and has somo very fine
specimens; among which are his
thoroughbred Plymouth Rocks.—
The county is in a good condi
tion financially, as was shown by
Mr. Paxton, the treasurer, who
was on hand with the cash to pay
the expenses of the court..
It was decided to hold a meet
ing to select delegates to the State
and Congressionhl convention
during court week, therefore Hon.
James Thompson was called to
the chair and he explained the ob
ject of the .niceties. 'A motion

The large poplar tree near
Captain Alexander’s, in Wash-1
ington, has quite a Jbistory. It
is about 27 feel in circumference.
9 feet in diameter. Under the
shade of this romantic tree the
first synod ever held in Georgia
convened in 1790, and Dr.

minister ordained in The State,
was set apart to- his wdrk of

ATTACKED BY AN AI.IGATOK.
Near Glenmore, in this county, Mr.
I). F. McDuffie was looking after souk
turpentine hands when it became nec-
arv for him to cross Cain creek, at
old, out-of-the-way-ford, where the
water came up near the skirts of .his
saddle, the creeK being high ten days
ago. When well out in the stream
he felt something striae his foot, and
at the same time an aligator struck
his horse a stinging blow on the shoul
der, at which the animal becoming
frightened came near unseating
friend in the middle of the stream. At
this the huge reptile attacked Mr. Mc
Duffie with its mouth, caught him by
the vest and pants, and attempted to
pull him from the horse, but the cloth
being old the hold tore loose and the
gentleman escaped to land. After Mr,
McDuffie got away from the aligator it
followed him ( walking in an upright
position), nearly to the land, and hiss
ing and blowing seemed to threaten to
come out on the land after him. The
monster has been seen several times
and is said to be fully twelve feet long.
