Robbing the Treaeurg.
Washington, g May 21.—The
house dashed offlts usual lot of
pension bills tonight. Friday
nightB>afc s,t af*rt for tins busi
ness, and the looseness with 'which
it is transacted would be ridicul
ous were it note constant waste of
the people’*!- money. A regular
Hwvhiiisrepreading through
out thfc north iud west. As the
result of such extravagance as the
bill recently pared by the senate,
which pensions tillSoldiers of the
late war who cannot make a living
and who hare teen disabled since
the war, this will cost $30,000,COO
a year in addition to the increased
pensions to widows and dependent
relations, which will call for $8.-
000,000 more annually.- The ore
dinary pension bill fur the next
year is about $80,000,000 besides
these additions. Such a rush for
pensions was never before known
and it is natural since congress is
constantly widening the range of
its bouhty and about ail that ap
pears to be necessary to the secure
ing of a pension is ihe applicatoin.
Northern congressmen nre becom
ing ajarmed at this indiscriminate
raid on the treasury but do not
pare to raise a voice or cast a vote
against it for fear of the soldier
vote. Southern men cannot effect
ually oppose this extravagance
and their slightest protest is
misconstrued into enmity to the
soldiers of the union. President
Cleveland's recent voice of warn
ing on this subject, has fall.n on
doaf ears in congress, but it is said
to voice a strong and growing senti
ment among the people who may
see that their wishes are obeyed.
Albany News.—Albany needs a
male teacher after the pattern of
pedttgagues of fifty years ago, with
a wise head, an indomitable will,
and last but. not least, a strong
arm. This is no reflection on our
boys, who.are up to the average
in politeness, obadidence and mor
ality, but boys don’t learn much
unless they respect the teacher,
and those qualities always insure
respect.
