LANIER & YOUMANS, Proprietors. VOL 3. Important Shoe; Oa. Southern [Chill and Fever Remedy There being such a great demand for Fovcr remedies in this country, |l have boon making a special study taf the different remedies used in malnrialtroubles ever since I have been in tbe drag business.' I de termined last Fall upon putting up' some preparation that would cure the majority of cases of Fever, Ague, Chills, etc., and that would take the place of a great number of Northern and Western Fever and Ague remedies, believing that one living in this section.’is capable of preparing something that is better for tho peculiar class of fever-ami th? debilitating condition of the system that prevails during tho Summer months. I have far ex ceeded my expectations— Last Spring I began to . manufacture KINGS’ FEVER TONIC, ince which time I have put up md sold several ’thousand bottles, 4 IT HAS NEVER FAILED TO CURE A single instance. Mothers Poisoning their Innocent Babes with Laudanum Concealed in, a Secret Nostrum, “Guaranteed, to contain no Opiate,” Chief Justice Common Sense Says : Ladies and Gentlemen of this vast uni verse.—-This case is certainly the most important that has ever come before us for consideration, and demands our undivided attention. It is by no means a new issue, for, as far back iw we can trace the true science of medicine, we can also see that this evil has existed : —this claim of some to have “discover ed” some wonderful -healing' balm known only to themselves and some ig noramus from whom they learacdhow to make their panacea—I need not tell the intelligent how uterly false such claims are, both as to the origin, and value of these nostrums. We think test of merit is the only fair test, and the universal sentiment is that every, one should be willing to "abide by it.. Compe tition in the manufacture of medicihep, to the extent that it lias for its pr | object the placing of the best upon tbe market, c a t a1»l i tbe legitimate place of a preparation on its merits,’ To ward off such competition by claims of a 'secret known only to the manufacturer, is to substitute false recommendations for true ones, and to elevate the inferior to a par with that wli?ph -is* first-class.— We have positive evidence, also, that ed the formula of Jennings lever carefully compiled statistic on the gub- [Tonie, and pronounce it efficient jyct’Of-dw<fe*ta»pd^cidept.-UL'ke.teu* and harmless. uerpenhdor entldhood estimates that ' Twenty Thousand Children Arc annually killed outright by the use of so-called “Soothing Syrup,” “gdar- anteed to contain no opiate.” Think of this, gentlemen and ladies of tfie great Jury of Public Opinion, see tbe loving mother dropping the vile opium mixture that is to till her child, worst of all with her own hand murdering her innocent babe, laboring under the de lusion that “it contained no opium,” and yet analysis shows that a certain popular “soothing syrup” does contain a large, dangerously large \ proportion of laudanum and 20,000 children are es timated as being the number that are each year swept into the grave by it and similar preparations, “said to contain !H gia& turn away in disgust, from all such vile mixtures, as they have no means of judging of their applicability and are not willing to give blindly an unknown ihixture which'may be worth less, may be dangerous- and might poesi bly suit the diseases for which it was recommended, but .no certainty exists as to the strength or uniformity of the preparation, it is a secret, or pat- tent medicine, made with an eye to cheapness of production, amL exclusive control, based on a false claim of .“dis covery,” and peculiar virtues and me dicinal qualities with an utter disregard to truth, science and. common sense. Such.claims,-however, are short-lived for the public.: though deceived for the time cannot always be hoodwinked, and arc fast finding out the hollowness of pattent medicine boastings. The truly meritorious cannot, be cried down nor it be retarded,, it is a part of $he cli of progress, and the only way to t it is to do better than others, in all departments where experience, skill, productive facilities and commer cial honesty arc legitimate factors. In keeping wtth this view of the man ufacture of medicines which are and al ways will be in ■ demand, a class of remedies have sprung up to meet a popular demand, I allude to non-secret, or remedies having the formula on them, thus enabling Physicians— who a class oo busyto nianufacture or compound their own'prescriptions,— to inspect them and recommend. them in eases to which they are suited.. The e who take such preparations are ed to Know what they are taking, and what they may reasonably expect to gain from them. Prominent among this class of remedies I would call^-our ntion to PricKly Ash, Poke Hoot and Potassium, compound (P. P. P) as aedy of rare merit, being composed as it is of the fluid extracts of Pricklv Ash, Poke Boot,. Stillingia, Sarsaparil la and containing the Iodide of Potas sium, all well-known alternatives or Blood Purifiers, carefully proportioned and combined,.so that each table spoon ful represents an exact amount of each of those valuable Blood Remedies. Tbe P. P. P. Mfg. Company use the grjen Roots and Barks in making the various Fluid Extracts ond in this way secure the full medicinal strength of" each of the vegetable remedies used. Physi cians endorse it a* a perfect Blood Medicine and the public lind in it a re liable remedy for Rheumatism, Scrofu la, Syphillis, Old Sores,- Malarial I*ois- ining and ajl hrpkcu down conditions •rvquiimg a powerful tonic and alterna tive.
