THEIR CLAIMS- ARE UNFOUNDED, AND THFIR FORMULAS WILL NOT-BEAR THE PIERCING SCRUTINY OF CHEMISTS AND PHYSICIANS. MANY ARE WORTHLESS AND SOME ACTUALLY DANGER OUS TO HUMAN LIFE. The Startling Revelation that Twenty Thousand Infants are Annually Killed in the Uni ted States by the Use of. “Soothing Syrup” Whi6h Analysis Shows to Contain a Large Per. cent, of Opium. Mothers Poisoning their Innocent Babes with Laudanum Concealed in Secret Nostrum, “Guaranteed to contain no Opiate.” CniEF Ju8tice Common Sense Says : Ladies and Gentlemen of this vast uni verse.—This case is certainly the most important that has ever come before us for consideration, and demands undivided attention. It is by no means a near issue, for, as far back as we*£an trace the true science, of medicine, w< can also see that this evil has existed . —this claim of some to have “discover ed" some wonderful healing balm known only to themselves and some ig noramus fronT wham they learned how to make their panacea—I need not tell the intelligent how uterly false such claims ave, both as to the origin, and value of these nostrums. We think the test of merit is the only fair test, and the universal sentiment is' that every one should be willing to abide by it. Compe tition in the manufacture of medicines, to the extent that it lias for its primary object the placing of the best article upon the market, establishes the legitimate place of a preparation on its merits. To ward off such competition by claims of a secret known only to the manufacturer, is to substitute false recommendations for true ones, and to elevate the inferior to a par with that which is first-class.— We have positive evidence, also, that many of these nostrums are actually dangerous to human life, notably, a ‘fully compiled statistic on the sub- Twenty Thousand Children few of the great number of unsolic-1 . anteed to contain no opiate. ' Think of this, gentlemen and ladies of the great Jury of Public Opinion, .see the loving mother dropping the vile opium mixture that is to kill her child, worst of all with her own hand murdering her innocent babe, laboring under the de lusion that “it contained no opium,” and yet analysis shows that a certain popular “soothing syrup” does coutain a large, dangerously largo! proportion of laudanum and 20,000 children are es timated as being the number that are each year swept .into the grave by it and similar preparations, “said to contain no opiate.” Pysicians turn away in disgust, from all such vile mixtures, as they have no means of judging of their applicability and are not willing to give blindly an unknown mixture which may be worth less, may be dangerous and might possibly suit the diseases for which it was recommended, but no certainty exists as to the strength or uniformity of the preparation, it is a secret, or pat- tent medicine, made with an eye to cheapness qf production, and exclusive control, based on a false claim of “dis covery,” and peculiar virtues and me dicinal qualities with an utter disregard to truth, science and common sense. Such claims, however, are short-lived for the public, though deceived for the time cannot always be hoodwinked, and are fast finding out the hollowness of pattent medicine boastings. The truly Southern \Ceill and Fever Remedy There being such a great demand [for Fever, remedies in this country, jl have been making a special study iof the different remedies used in gmnlarial troubles ever since I have Sbcen in the drug business. In keeping wtth this view of the man ufacture of medicines which are and al ways will be in demand,, a class of remedies have sprung np to meet a popular demand, I allude to non-secret or remedies having the formula on them, thus enabling Physicians— who are as a class oobusyto manufacture or compound their own prescriptions,— to inspect them and recommend them in cases to which they are * suited. The people who take such preparations are enabled to Know what they are taking, and what they may ‘reasonably expect to gain from them. Prominent among this class of remedies I would calf your attention to PricKly .Ash, Poke Root and Potassium, compound (P. P.
