DEALER IN Chief Justice Common Sense Says : Ladies and Gentlemen of this vast uni verse.—This case is certainly the most important that has ever come before us for consideration, and demands our undivided attention. It is by no means a new issue, for, as far back- as we can trace the true science of medicine, we can also sec that this evil has existed: —this claim of some to have “discover ed” some wonderful -healing balm known only to themselves and some ig noramus from whom they learned how to make their panacea—I need not tell the intelligent how uterly false such claims are, both as tdthe origin, and value of these nostrums. We .think the test of mentis the only fair test, and the universal sentiment is that every one should be willing to abide by it. Compe tition in'the manufacture of medicines, to the extent that it has for its primary object the placing of the best article upon the market, establishes the legitimate place of a preparation on' its merits. To ward off such competition by claims of a secret known only to the manufacturer, is to substitute false recommendations for true ones, and to elevate the inferior to a par with that which is first-class.— We have positive evidence, also, that many of .these nostrums are actually dangetwo* to human life, notably, a earefullv compiled statistic on the sub ject of the diseases Incident to the ten der period of ..childhood estimates that . Twenty Thous&rd' BUM- ] Arc annually killed outright by the use ] of so-called “Soothing Syrup,” “guar- J anteed to contain no opiate.” .Think i of this, gentlemen and ladies of the great Jury of Public Opinion, sec the loving mother dropping the vile opium mixture that is to kill her child, worst J of all with her own hand murdering her 1 innocent babe, laboring under the de lusion that “it contained no opium,” ] and yet analysis shows that a certain 4 popular “soothing syrup” does contain a large, dangerously large! proportion , of luudauum and 20,000 children are es timated as being the number Unit are £ each year swept into the grave bj It and ] similar preparations, “said to contain no opiate.” ■, Pysicians turn away in disgust, from \ all such vile mixtures, as they have no . means of judging of their applicability and are not M illing to give blindly an J unknown mixture which may be worth- 1 less, may be dangerous and might possibly suit the diseases for which it was recommended, but no certainty ’ exists as to the strength or uniformity of the preparation, it is a secret, or pat- tent medicine, made with an eye to cheapness of production, and exclusive control, based on a false claim of “dis covery,” and peculiar virtues and me- | dicinal qualities with an utter disregard . to troth, science and common sense. | Such claims, however, are short-lived for the public, though deceived for the time cannot always be hoodwinked, and JACKSON GRIMES. In keeping wtth this view of the man ufacture of medicines which are and al ways will be in demand, a class of remedies have sprung up to meet a popular demaud, I allude to non-secret or remedies having the formula on them, thus enabling Physicians— who are as a class oo busy to manufacture or compound their own prescriptions,— to, inspect them and recommend them in cases to which they are suited. The people who take such preparations are enabled to Know what they are taking, and what they may reasonably expect to gain from them. Prominent among this class of remedies I would call your attention to PricKly Ash, Poke Root and Potassium, compound (P. P.
