Mr. C. C. Buchanan has a rule
at the mill of Buchanan * Murphy,
now being built, “that any man or

guage, in any respect, shall be dis
charged on the spot." As we hare
said, this is a good rule, for several
reasons, which aro apparent to all

Our beloved Pastor Rev. Mr.
Whiting, leaves us this week, with
his family to spend a short vaca
tion with relatives in upper Geor
gia. He carries with him a cin-
cere prayer from every member of
his flock, for a pleasant visit and a
safe return, with the health of his
little one restored.
Drs. Folks & Carswell have in al
cohol stumor weighing one pound
which they successfully removed
from the person of Miss Jane Pitt
man, near Glenmore, this county,
last Saturday. Dr. Folks bus had
some experience, in removing tu
mors, but he says this is tins largest
he ever tackled. It is hoped the pa
tient will, relieved of this great in-

We have much more to do; our
work is not complete, nor will wc
tire until we have made as much
improvement in the future as has
been made in the past. We hope
to see each county in our section
send to the legislature men that are
true to themselves and their peo
pie’s interests, and who will pay
more attention to the subject of ed
ucation than any other measure,
for this is one of tho most impor
tant. Where the masses are being
educated crime and ignorance does
not previ.il to the extent that it
does where the people are wrapt in
darkness.
With these suggestions we con
tinue our voyage to the Head
light’s readers, each week trying
to carry a full cargo, and stopping
at all the stations along the route
we hope to take the names of all
who desire to go the whole trip.

A MISTAKE,
On July the 5th, Mr. Henry Gib
son went to Folkston to meet a
brother from South Carolina whom
he had never seen. As the train
rolled up and stopped, Mr. Gibson
saw a man alight, and supposing
him to be his brother rushed 'up
with open arms to embrace him,
when to his dismay the stranger
(whose name, was Nash) shoved
him back, drew a pistol and was
about to shoot Mr." Gibson, sup

Some time ago the insurance
companies doing business in
Georgia were put on notice that
they were neglectiug to make
tho annual returns to the Com-
troller Geueral as required by
law, and that the time in which
those returns could be made
would soon expire. A number
of companies have since filed
their returns, but others have
not yet been heard from. Yes
terday was the last day
which the Comproller could re
ceive the returns, and fi. fas.
were immdeiately to be issued
against the companies that had
not complied with the law. The
penalty is $500 for each delin
quent company. The last Leg
islature relieved severai com
panies from the penalty incur
red by them on the ground that
it was their first violation of 4he
law, for which indifference more
or less sotisfactery explanations
were made. It is not believed
the next Legislature will ex

college as a branch of the State

The Griffin Sun tells how a
gentleman of that city has put
$50,000 into the Griffin and
Monticello railroad aud insured
its completion this summer,
making a connection with the
Macon and Athens and Rich
moud and Danville roads.
Griffin promises to be one of the
most enterprising, as it is al
ready one of the most beautiful
and refined of the lesser cities
of Georgia.
