Southern Pine Ferrate.
Northern capital is seeking
investment more nml more in
the Pine lands of the South.—
There lands are enhancing rap
idly in value, and investors who
are able to hold can expect to
realize in a few years a hand
some profit, says a well inform
ed Northern exchange. They
can fcce plainly that the present
policy of the tur|ientinc and
mill owners is working a rapid
and complete destruction of the
forests owned by them, and se
cures a certainty of profit lo
those who can afford to bold
their lends unharvested. The
turpentining and cutting for
mill purposes of the half-grown
and small trees destroys utterly
the future crop, which could be
liurvestcd continually for a long
term of years if a more judicious
and economical treatment was
adopted. The owner of a small
timber tract has thereon a
source of income, small per
haps, but certain und contin
uous for an almost unlimited pe
riod, if he could content him
self with small annual returns
and not permit the demon of
dcsiro for imaginary “quick
riches to induce him to “kill the
goose which lays the golden
egg.” It has been demonstra
ted that when the large full
grown timber, suitable for mar
keting at a profit, is cut from
the land, the smull, half-grown
trees rapidly reach maturity;
and again, us these in turn are
cut when full growth is reached
they are replaced by those still
smaller, and thus the process of
cutting and growth continues
indefinitely, und the full crop
matures and is lot: vested, and
tlio full value realized is an in
come derived through a long
scries of years. This process is
the true one, and 1ms been that
formerly practiced ulung the
Southern rivers which annually
floated to market the fully ma
tured crop. With, however, the
advent of railroad, the railroads,
the saw-mills scattered all over
the forests, and with the turpen
tine iutercsts creeping with
scratching und devastating
blight over the land, the half
grown crop is ruined, and that
which should be for generations
a source of revenue is blaster
and cut off and disposed of for
a comparatively small pittance.
It is to be hoped that thoso
who arc purchasing the timber
lands of Ware, Pierce, Clinch
and Coffco counties will not
permit this process of destruc
tion to devastate thoir domains,
but thut ultimately the method
of harvesting only the fullgrowu
crop will make the property a
source of continuous and profit
able income.
