Waycross. Mr. Davis claims that he committed the crime with which he stands accused, in self defence, and asks tlie people’s prayers that his prosecutors’ hearts may be softened to give him only Justice. Some weeks ago, Bro. Ward,of the Baxley Banner, said, more than one dollar a year was too much | no t 8omc person in the A ZEALOUS COLOUED MAN. Parson Allen, pastor of the A. M. E. Church, of this place, and one of the most respectable colored men of the community, is agitating the subject of building a Seminary here for the education of the colored people. His views in this direc tion are broad. He claims that if the colored people are provided yvith the means of education they will make better citizens, be of more benefit to themselves and a help to the county at large. This is nothing more nor less than we have said* and wo sincerely hope Parson Allen may find eomo per son willing and able to help him emancipate his race from the dark, ers of ignorance, for where there are no graded institutions of learn ing the progression of any and every people show a desire, and a tendency that cannot be denied, to retrograde. Let there be no back ward movement in this matter. for the people of Coffee connty to pay for a paper in which the legal advertising was done. He told the truth, and the officers took the hint at once, for the legal advertis ing was transferred to the Head light. We feel grateful to our buddie, for his advice in the prem ises. Some months ago a northern firm advertised in this paper fo r “White Heron and Egret Skins,*’ and n gentleman living near this place went down to the Okefenokee Swamp and killed a number of those birds, skinned them, dried the skins with the feathers on, and sent them to the firm. They were received and paid for, and, when our informant was in town some weeks ago, he was realizing ten dollars per day killing and skin ning birds. UNION 8.8. JUBILEE. A movement is on foot to effect a Union Sunday School Celebra- ton at an early date. It is the in tention of the prime movers in the affair to have • all the Sunday Schools of the county represented, in a whole, or by delegates. Ample arrangements will be made, and the participants maybe required to bring along their baskets, so a day of enjoyment may be the fruit of the meeting, besides, it is desir ous to effect a County Sunday school Association. Further notice will be given in time. JltBflWl Her Yojjlh. FKABSON. This was our old home. We lived there long enough to leam to love the people, and to note their posperitv and advancement gives us pleasure. Wc went up there last Sunday to hear Rev. Mr. Eth ridge preach, in the commence ment of a protracted meeting, this, being also, his regular appointment at that place. We found, on arrivoh the neat 111 tie church pretty full, among them familiar and strange faces. The sermon was a good one —a regular missionary sermon, which had the effect of producing the desired result for it softened the hearts of the young divine’s hear ers, and caused the good people of that place to contribute handsome ly toward the missiouary fund. The assessment for that church was $26,55, for this year, and $51,- 45 even, was subscribed and some of that amount paid over, making $24,95 more than was called for, or nearly double the assessmsnb This is an improvement ia the right direction, and shows that the church is in a healthy condition. The 'Sundajr-eSfiWrt 'ia in fine condition, with Mrs. Kirkland, Su perintendent, and Calvin Parker, assistant. Teachers and scholars appear zealous, aud all pushing forward to garner in the sheaves for the master. Notes. Bro. Jessie Pafford and brother have been assisting the meeting. We shall come again, iflife lasts, before the year is gone, dear friends. Several new houses and stores have been built at this place in the post year. When Bev. Mr. Ethridge closed his sermon at 12 o’clock there were some “misty eyes.” That’s* good sign. Rev. Mr. Brett, of Wareaboro amlourself, imposed on Mrs. Bessie Whatley, as clever a lady as ever lived, for our dinner. Both of ns Methodists, and the reader can sympathize with the lady. 27th.of last month. : He was raft ing timber down St Mary’s riven and foul stopped on the. river bank to eat ■ supper, -when .lightning struck a t ree, killed him abd stunn ed two other men. The agriculturtal outlook in this connty Is good. Crops are some 1 what late, as a result of the late spring, bntwith propitious seasons o good lmrvfcst will be realized. The condition of the farmers in this county is improving; farmers arc beginning to realize the impor tance of raising fertilizers, but do not give attention enough to th« compost heap which must become the basis of succcsscful agriculture in this section.
