IT IS SO REPORTED FROM ST. PETERSBURG. Union Auociated Press. St- Petersburg, Aug. 10.—The latest reports from the Far East have caused the greatest appre hensions in official circles. In formation is received that the Japanese are in possession of heights from which they com maud fortifications of Port Ar thur-with their seige guns. Oth er reports indicate that General Kuropatkin’s army is completely cut off aod retreat is now impos sible. The situation is admitted to be exceedingly critical. Japs Advancing. Union Associated Preas. San Min Fu, Aug. 10.—It is reported that Japs are advancing on Liao Rank from five direc tions. Will Start for Far East. Union Associated Preas. Berlin, Aug. 10.—It is report ed from St- Petersburg that the Russian Baltic fleet comprising ^Jit battleships, nine cruisers and about forty other warships will start for the Far East about August 17. Rear Admiral Roj estvenski will command. Notification Party, Un on Associated Prcai. New York, Aug. 10. — The democratic notification commit tee of about 800 guests started on ferry boat Sagamore from • the foot of west twenty-second street at 8 o’clock this morning for Esopus to notify Judge Parker officially of his nomina tion. It is expected to arrive at one and will start for home at five. Murphy and McCurren were in the party, but kept apart. Jewels Found. Union Auociated Press. New York. Aug. 10.—Social circles are greatly mystified over the loss and recovery of the Goulet jewels valued at 1200,000. Statement was given out that the jewels were uot lost at all, but that Mrs. Ogden Goelet simply forgot that she had left them in the safe in her city residence. As there are some discrepancies in the statement nobody believes it It is stated that the jewels been really stolen by a per son moving in Mrs. Goelet’s cir cles, but were returned quietly when exposure was threatened. It has been decided to hold notification ceremonies on board ferry boat in case the rain should continue until afternoon. Precaution Taken Washington, Aug. 10.—The Government has taken precau tion to protect the life ot the Russian Ambassador, Count Cas sini whose life it is believed is threatened by nihilist 'conspira- tors. Wll Answer Favorable Constantinople, Aug. 10.—The American minister received message from Porte promising a favorable answer in regard to the demands made by the state de partment in a day or two. Aug. 11—The po lice are investigating another kidnapping by members of the secret Italian blackmailing or ganization called Black Hand, who stole the nine year old son of James Mannino awealthy con tractor. They demand $600 ran som. Montgomery for North. Union Associate! Press. Washington, Aug. 11. The navy department received reprrt that Montgomery sailed from Colon. She has been ordered north to be placed out ot com mission. No Speedy Settlement. Union Associated Press. Chicago, Aug. 11.—There is no hopes for a speedy settlement of the beef strike. Union Aiaooialed 1 res*. London, Aug. 11.—It. is re ported from Tokio that the at tempt of the Russian fleet to es cape from Port Arthur was frus trated by the Japanese after two severe battles. London, Ang. 11—The Jap. auese legation received confirma tion of report that Russian fleet made an attempt to escape from Port Arthur. It is stated that the Japanese fleet closed in on the Russians and after a sovdro battle compelled them to flee back to Port Arthur. Causes Dissatisfaction. Union AsHocintcd Press. Chicago, Aug. 11. The strict rules enforced by Co). Whitehall, now in command at Fort Sheri dan, caused great dissatisfaction among the troops; thirteen de serted and eighty men are now locked op in the guard house. Body Brought Here Union Associated Press. St. Louis, Aug. 11.—The body of former Senator Vest arrived here this morning and towards noon was taken to Bell-Fontaine cemetery. Lincoln, Aug: 11.—Nebraska -'democrats and populists in the convention this morning agreed on fusion and will support the same state ticket. Populists nomiuated George W. Deur Judge:—Since the cow question is up again I hope you will allow a few words from one that heretofore has been neither for nor uguinst the cow. Miss Evelyn Rutherford, of Americus, lias accepted a posi tion us stenographer in the offi ces of the Atlantic & Birming ham Railroad here. She is stop ping at tile May House, Mr. W. H. Strickland, who resides at No. 30 Brower street, says he has a patch of the finest sugar cane to be found anywhere in this whole section. Somo of tno stalks have twelve well form ed joints. This goes to show that Ware county soil can’t be beat when it comes to sugar cane Miss Georgia Ray McMillan, an elocutionist, who gave an en tertainment in Waycross some timo since, is dangerously ill in Indianapolis, Ind. But little or no hopes are entertained for her recovery. Miss Wes Pollard, who lias been visiting friends and rela tives in this city, left this morn ing for her home at Bluffton, Mrs. O. G. At any rate we will be pretty apt to vote for the man of our choice. Mayor J. A. Jones went to Savannah this morning to attend the convention of Georgia May ors, whicli convened in that city to-day. Morgan & Rahil have opened up a furniture repairing and up holstering business at US Thomas street. They will also renovate and make to order mattretses, etc. Miss Gertie Slilck returned to tier lions: in Tifton last Monday, after spending severul weeks with Miss IduGruy. Miss Slack is one of Tifton's most popular and talented young ladies, and is loved and admired ail over the state, her many friends hero wisli to see her here again soon.
