Lynching in a horrible remedy Vjut it is the only one that has done the patient any good. The llerald does not favor lynching as a past time, but only as a preventive of outrage. The Russian bear_ like other bears is stubborn hut he fights without judgment. Thai Oapt. Hitch will be vin dicated by the court of inquiry his friends are fully satisfied The Russian battle fleet had better arrango for hiding places before it tackles the Japaneso warships. Thirty years ago the British burnod Washington. They could not do it now without a right smart tussle. It is not beliovod that the loss of the Japauose around I’ort Ar thur are near so great as have been reported. What do they want to try the state militia for? They liavn’t burned auy white people nor lynched any negroes. The Savannah News says that one lynching loads to another. The News should have said, an other outrage leads to another lynching. Mrs. Maybrick, who poisoned her husband in Knglaud, has re* turned to America and is the heroine of the day. We Ameri cans are n queer pcoplo. (iov. Terrell saYs lie is deeply mortified at the action of the Statesboro mob. The governor -is also doubtless ashamed of the negroes who massacred the Hodg es family. Dr. Bruner has stirred up warm proposition when he gets ufter Dr. Westmoreland. West moreland went all the way to New York once to ship a fellows' face. The South has overcome stu- peuduous difficulties and she has other stupomluons difficulties to overcome, not the least among them, the racS^fMffim, wlrcli our northern friends do not' uu. derstand. Booker T. Washington's son has been fined 415.00 for scorch ing on his bicycle at Quincy, Moss. That’s a shame. Booker Washington's son should be al lowed to ride over all the repub licans in Massachusetts The Herald is glad Hint no more white people were killed at Statesboro during the recent riot. It occurs to us that the sacrifice of tbe Hodges family was suffi cient loss for our aide. The Japi should enter the port of Shanghai and destroy the Rus sian ships. She would be justi fied in so doing. It seems, how* ever, that Japan wants to catch the Bnssisn snips aliVe and pre fers to have them come out into the open sea fight. RESEVFLTISM BEARS FRUIT IN MOB LAW. By M. B. Whs-ton. D. P The great tragedy which was enacted at'tbe Buffalo exposit ion was io many respects the saddest event that ever hap pened to tbe American people. Tbe bullet of Czolgosz went to the very heart of tbe nation. It is true that tbe Democrats out numbering the Republicans in the United States regretted tbe defeat of their candidate, but all north and south rejoiced io the ascendancy to the executive chair of a man so able good and human as McKinley. His ad ministration was greatly blessed. He was at home in tbe south as well as in tbe north. He did not scruplo to wear a Confeder ate button at the reunion at Ma con, innocent as he knew sucli an act, and lie won the hearts of all by his broad, statesman' like practical utterances whenever be rose to speak. He was the friend of tbe black race, of course, but he did not try to be little and degrade bis own race though they lived south of tbe 1’otomoc river. He had success fully brought to his close the Spanish-Ainericau war, and was dealing kindly and wisely with the now peoples who had fallen to our lot by tbe fortunes of war. All at once he fell when in the discharge of his duty by an assassin's builct to bo succeeded by an adventurer, whoinstead gravely and modesty endeavor ing to carry out lire great pre- decqseor’r policy, sot himself at once to usurp authority not grauted him by the constitution, rfnd play the mixture of being between a Caesar -and a Don Quixote, arrogating to himself everything, overriding the legis lative department ot the govern ment, and deliberately attempt ing, though he had a noble sou thern woman for a mother, to make twelve-million Anglo Sax on freetneu subservient to the Ignorant black population of the south, who had been uuwisely given the ballot; all with the hope of continuing himself and party in power, though the ruin of the country was the conse quence. Ho "showed his band early in his presidential career by taking to his home and table on terms of perfect social equal ity a prominent southern negro, who until possibly injured by him wns doing a mighty work in uplifting along proper lines his race. . Not content with this insult to nil the south ho went to work to fasten upon white communities negro officers, though the white pcoplo were the owners of all properly, payers of all taxes, aud in every respect In tv abiding citi zens. On the venerable and his toric city uf Charleston, where all the custom duties came from white people he appointed a ne gro collector aguinst their earn est protest. Ho excused lynch ing of horse thieves in the west because horses wore valuable, but did not tolerate in any sense the lynching of negro men who violated the persons nf white women of tbe south. Now for the fruits of hiasput- rageous policy. Our country is cursed by Colombia for tbe rape of u province: It is condemned by tbe Filipinos for not allowing them a government like ours, free attfi “with the consent of the governed.’’ It is denounced by Cuba for failure of reciprocity. It is condemned at home because oi such a waste of money as was never known in tbe history of the country. It has, owing to bis erase to mske this country a .world power, put imperatiatic ideas into the beads of the peo ple till we are uo longer the land ot our fathers aud .will * 1 his ideas ot conquest the Monroe doctrine is a farce. 1 That is not all. Hit negro policy has been such that crime among tbe negroes hat been on tbe increase; and tbe poisoned cbatice has been commended to the lips of those who dwell in the north. Men in New York, Penn- en-cuon. n eivciea i ■«. wq-.- ~» sylvania and the west are fear; [ jffijffJiiKaiffli! “ro*/ci«c‘nt°a't? ing the black peril more than For JiScs Cttj Court or ITajeross. I will be ■ candidate lor Judge of the CUT Court of Wevoron, at the Oo« tober election ttau vesr. eubjeet to too action of ti e Democratic Executive Committee In reference to a primary election. Jf elected I will perform the Germany does the yellow peril. Take one case out of hundreds the awful scenes that have re cently been enacted at States boro, in this state, the result nf machinations of a black mafia gang worse than the Italian band that did the horrible work New Orleans. Let the people of the north pictare to themselves the scene. A family by the name of Hodges are in quiet possession of tbeir home. By hard work and (ru gality, they had acquired a com petency and it was supposed hnv ing recently sold a piece of land to havo money. A father, i mother md three children are to- getlier. No word had ever been spoken against the Hodges. They were prominent, industrious, kind-hearted, religions people. But while they were enjoying in an humble way the blessings God had given them they were fallen upon and brutally butchered by negroes belonging to "Tbe Be fore Day Club.” Every torture was visited upon .them by these bonds incarnate, gaud then they were burnod, if not at the stake in a way equally as horrible, by setting fire to the house. Their Jodies were as crisp from fire ns bodies could be. They told on i each other, were tried- nnd con demned to be hanged. The out raged people having waited till the law pronounced them gnilty, lynched them, burned them as . they had burned tire bodies of their victims. The state tried to prevent the lynching, but the troops wore overpowered. That is the whole story. While this will be heralded through the uorth as a southern outrage, 1 here prooounce it Rooseveltism bearing its fruits. Had it not been for Roosevelt coddling tbe the negro these ,devlish ideas would not have gotten into their beads in all probability. The better class of negroes know bet ter than do such .deeds, and get along all right, and believe sou thern men are their best friends. But in remote districts like the one in question they just think that “so Roosevelt is for them they don’t care who shall be against them.” They have'an idea that a man who has done as he has thus far and is running on a platform which proposes to re duce the representation of white men in congress, will do anything to uphold them. This scene at Statesboro should not injure the Democratic party. It should help it. If lie does this much wearing a dead man’s shoes, what will he not do when! if elected, he puts ou his owu high-top cowboy boots, and goes forth with a big stick, or pistol nl his side? There is but one way to avoid the ruiu of our country, and that is remand this man to the rear. If elected and he at tempts to carry out or enlarge upon Ills present negro poliey, St. Domingo will be >i blooming Elysium compared to tiii s sou thorn land of ours. And the north will suffer in consequence. Let our orators everywhere point to Rooseveltism bearing its - fiuit8, and I believe tbe people df this land will demanding the expiration, "root and branch,” nf such a valeful tree.
