Harvio Jordan's ailvice to the farmers to hold their cotton did not pan out right. ft occurs to us that if Mrs. Chadwick has a husbind now is the time she needs him. A drunken man who frighten* ed Indies on the streets of Al bany got thirty days on the gang. It in shrewdly suspected that this is not the first time thnt Mrs. Chadwick Ins been under, arrest. An exohango siys: “Tommy Kotson is to publish a literary magazine. Tom's powder mag azina has about played out.’’ It sgems likely IhatMrs.Chad- wick will turn out to be Mrs. Du- Vine who has served a sentence in the penitentiary. h'ometliing ought to be <Jono with Mrs. Chadwick but wo are not exactly clear in regard to what her punishient should he Russia says that money dues not buy happiness. Shun'il he vis'd FREE RAILWAY PASSES. We do not know if sh}’ ona in- ten Is to introduces bill when the legislature convenes in June next to prohibit public officials using free railroad passes but we are informed that it is possible a bill will be introduced rerjuir ing railiosds to furnish frea pas ses to the members of the legis lature. The idea is that free passes are due legislators by the railroads for the right eminent domain granted them by the state and, if the granting of free pas ses is made compulsory the ex tension of them will carry with it no obligation of any sort on the part of legislators to the riUi roads. The origin of the free pass is not known to us. At first they were given sparingly to the more lersonugesin the communities, who had lit' le occasion to travel, and ns a compliment, something like Christmas cards; then ton larger circle, as a courtesy, in business dealings; then to legis lators, and to the judiciary, and to many other classes. The custom has gradually grown from year to year, until the free- pass system lias become a bur den upon the railroads. We tlAnk the railway companies would be glad if the legislature brings them some relief on this line. We believe the railroads would bo the last to kick against enactment of a law to prevent public offieaU of any and every kind from riding on free passes. The recipients of free passes regard tlipin as a compliment. They have no Hesitancy in ac cepting them, but would bn too proud or libnost to accept the gift of a few dollars in money To be deprived of a privilege liken free piss, oncp enjoyed, is no doubt a hardship.—Macon Naws Pay Voir Tates.
