ON SOUTHERN TRIP

Washington, April 4.—With cheers
and good wishes resounding at the
Pennsylvania station the president,
at 9:05 a. m., today on a special train
started on a trip through tho south.
Among those at tha station were
many frienda of the president, includ
tog Postmaster General Cortelyou and
Secretary Metcalf, of the department
of commerce and labor. The special
train, which is one of the finest the
pennsylvanita railroad has sent out
of Washington, consists of three cars,
the president's private car. Rocket,
tha Pullman sleeper Forest and the
combination baggage and buffet car
Viceroy. Attached to the train to be
run as far as Baltimore as a buffer
was a day coach. The train is ban
somely fitted ind contains every
known appliance to Insure the comfort
[ T and safety of the passengers. The
tratn was scheduled to leave at
o'clock, but la was a minute after that
hour when the president arrived at the
atation. He had been delayed at the
White House for a few minutes sign
ing some important papers. Even after
he entered hli car some papers were
handed to him for his signature. It
s was just five minutes after the sched
uled time of departure when the train
drew out of the station, in the par
ty besides the president was Secre
tary Wlllllam Loeb, Jr., J. L. Young
Dr. and Mrs. Lambert, Lieutenant G.
Fortescue, one of the president's

The trip Is being made primarily to
enable the president to attend the re
union of his old regiment, "The Rough
Riders," which it to be held at San
Antonio. Tex., next Friday, and to
hunt big game in Oklahoma and Colo-
redo.
Incidentally, the president will de
liver notable addresses at several
plaoea en route. His first lmprotant
atop will be at Louisville, Ky„ to-
<9 morrow morning, where he will be the
i ^Bst of the city for three hours. He
4 ^11 go from Louisville directdly to
8t. Louis, sod thence via the Missouri,
Kansas and Texas railroad, to San An
tonio, stopping at several places on
the way. among them Sherman and
ills*, Tex.
After leaving San Antonio the presi
dent will go to Oklahoma for a wolf
J»unt and proceed thence to Colorado
hunt big game In the mountains.
Unless It should be necessary on ac-
ount of unforseen clrcumstancea to
urtall the trip the president will be
bsent from Washington about two
Months. Definite plans for the trip
pter he shall leave Oklahoma have
ot been made, the purpose of the pres-
dent being to adjust his plans to the
bndltions as they may exist at the
lme. While he expects to be in the
rilds of Colorado for a considerable
ime, he will keep in constant touch
>y means of courier* to the nearest
telegraph station with Wishihgton,
and thus will be enabled to attend to
such important business a% may be
demanded by his personal-attentlon.
Dr. Lambert, who accompanies the
jresldeent, was his physician in Ne-w
York, and has hunted throughout the
country which the president will short-

Freight Handlers Strike.

out od a strike this morning.
Heretofore the freight truckers
have been receiving their pry

things, however, and refused to

Mrs. Ann McGiashan, wife
of General Peter McGiashan, of
Savannah, died this morning in
that city. Mrs. McGiashan was
a sister of Mrs. Dr. T S Paine
of this city. A fitting notice of
her life and death will appear in
these columns later.
