little city, tbe railroad man says, has
taken on new life and tbe town will
be the interior metropolis of South
Georgia in a very abort time. They
are establishing banks, erecting big
buildings, preparing to put in an dec-
trie street railway system, a gas plant
and various other enterprises at the
rate of one a day, be said. The appli
cant for the street railway franchise Is
J. E. Dempsey, a Waycross real
estate man, who has associated with
him Portsmouth, Norfolk and Rich
mond, Va., parties.
Work on building the new railroad
shops has been under way a week or
ten days. Mr. C. B. Myers, of Norfolk,
representing the Penn. Bridge
Co., Is on the gounds In charge. About
■100 car loads of brick have been pur
chased from a Macon concern. It is
stated that 4,000 car loads of sand will
be required for filling in purposes and
most of that will be brought in from
a short distance from Waycross. A
car load of mules and wagons have
been brought from Norfolk by tbe con
tractors and they are being housed on
the premises. These teams will be
used In transporting material about
the yards. The shops will be larger
than those of the Southern Railway at
Spencer, which are now the largest
in the South. At least 2,000 men will
be regularly employed, It is said and
the pay roll each month will foot up to
more than $150,000. The shops will
be located Just out of the city limits.
With the shops a yard of vast area
will be laid out with a capacity of
about 2,000 cars. A fine new passen
ger station, it is said, will be erected
while the other work is in progress,
y The population of Waycross Is now
10,000 but tbe trades bodies are Inter
esting themselves to get outside cap
italists to build dwellings for 1,000 new
families that are expected to come
with the completion of the shops. Al
ready there are no houses available In
Waycross and hotel accommodations
are insufficient. '
Waycross Is already headquarters
for the South Atlantic Car and Manu
facturing Company, the largest Indus
trial plant in Georgia. This company
has a monthly pay roll of over $30,000
and its annual business agregates $3.-
500,000. The orders on the books of
tbe company now amounts to $2,760,-
000, a large part of which Is in cars
being constructed for tbe Atlantic
Coast Line.
A well knowq Waycross contractor
is quoted aa saying that tbe new build-
lag work under way in Waycross and
which baa been given out to contrac
tors amounts to at leaat $1.$50,000.
This work includes the new AUpatlc
Coast Line shops and freight yards,
• the Baptist College, Elks' building.
Young Men's Christian Association

ments to streets, sewerage and water

to stay away. He also said tbe old

team has concluded an arrangement
with Manager Corlsh of tbe 8avannah
team for a game on that date provided
the team that Is to play here Jnly 3rd

There are sensible men all over
this country who started out to sup
port Hoke Smith for governor, who
are already disgusted with his sub
terfuge and are honest enough to ad-
that Hoke has never shown a plan
for its accomplishment that can be
gin to compare with the plan which
long ago accomplished the same thing:
mander be authorized to have printed
five hundred circulars to be distribut
ed in this and adjoining counties to
all veterans in order that we may
have a large parade on Memorial Day.
There being no further business the
meeting adjourned.

First Ones Seen In Brunswick on
Yesterday With Names.
Brunswick Journal.
The first cars bearing the new title
of the A. & B. system, the A. B. & A.
were seen in the lumber district
yesterday. There were two new flats,
this being their first trip. The number
were above 10,000, that being the In

The car Initials attracted consider
able interest among the lumber hand
lers as this is the first tangible
evidence here of the A. B. & A. sys

After hearing all the evidence avail
able, Judge Bird held the woman In
the sum of $50.00 for the Superior
Court. When last seen the old wo
man was out trying to get somebody
to sign her bond. When she was
asked If the gentleman ahe was cook
ing for would sign her bond, she re
plied, “No, he don’t think enough of
Henry for that.” Sho . evidently
thought she was getting the bond for
Henry and not for the purpose of
keeping out of jail herself.
