says that the cable lines are working
as far as "Valparlso Hut," the cable
building on the seashore on the out
side of Valparlso. All the land lines
to the Interior of Chilli are down.
The operator In the "Hut” says the

the San Francisco calamity.
New York, Aug. 17.—The Informa
tion received up to 10 this morning
regarding the earthquake, is still of
a meagre nature.
The first quake occurred at 7:40
last night and there were several se
ver shocks, followd by conflagrations.
•How far the fire extended or how
much damage will result, cannot yet
be learned.
Cable operators who left the offices
Jn the city lost night and repaired
to the "Hut” this morning, reestab
lished headquarters and are connect
ed with the main offlee.

The Governor and Wayne county are
to be congratulated upon the selection
of Col/ Bennett as solicitor.
Savannah, Ga., Aug. 17.—It Is ex
pected that It will not be & great
while before active work Is renewed
to collect a fund for the proposed
Oglethorpe monument to which the
legislature hus just given $16,000. the
monument association of which Mr.
Walter G. Charlton is president has
nearly $6,000 on hand now end it is
expected to make the total fund In
cluding the appropriation about $30,-
000. It may be that the monument
will not be in Chippewa Square.where
there Is now a fountain but that It
will be placed at the Intersection of
Bull street and Oglethorpe Avenue.
Many favor this location.

Savannah, (la., Aug. 17.—Consider
able .excitement, was cansn'J on West
Broad street oppoelie the Central
Railway depot !nte yesterday after
noon by a tiro in the priest residence
at St. Patricks church. The fire was
in one of the bed rooms afnl it blazed
sharp for n time. As soou as it
was discovered the alarm was gl^en
and in a abort time tho fire aparatua
from the western part of the city was
on the spot. Two lines of hose were
run into the house and the fire was
out in nbout ten minutes. It attracted )
a large arowd to the scene.
