Tuesday anil Saturday they consider generally unlucky days, and if they shave or cut their nails on either of these days thereafter they will always be in trouble and will perhaps die soon. The Malay never sleeps in tho after noon because of the fear that to waste tho hours of daylight tend* to shorten life. If a Malay finds his clothes to have been bitten by a rat lie is sure that it signifies imd luck, and if lie can possibly a .‘Ford it the clothes are given away in the name of charity. There is a species of bird called in the Malay country rowk rowk. which lives in the fields and docs not build a nest. It is be lieved that whoever obtains a rowk rowk’s nest will become invisible by placing it on his head. Of course the Malays believe there is such a nest hidden away somewhere. The Malays nhv ay a abstain from taking food during an eclipse of the sun or the moon and are exceeding ly careful about their baths, so as to prevent the attack of contagious diseases. The crow is a bird of es pecially ill omen to the Malay, and if it is heard cawing near a habita tion it njeans death to some one of the inmates. In some other parts of the world if an owl alights on or near n house and hoots it is said to mean "death or desolation”—the house ’may be burned or sold for debt or ether misfortune. If a black cat crosses the road .in f flint of a Malay lie will at once turn bflek and pursue Iii$> journey by an other w;!\\ The crossing of tlie black cot signifies danger involving the loss of life. In some other countries a rabbit crossing the rMffl lit is the same significance. The die agreeable habit of biting the finger nails it»-almost unknown among the Malays. They believe that if in dulged in the habit will surely lead to poverty. It is considered by the Malay to be a very lucky tiling to see a pig or a Chinese, funeral before tho sun rises. Whatever he attempts on this day will he sure to prosper. Dreaming of jumping a brooklet fis sures the dreamer that he will die in a short time. Then the faithful Malay dreamer gives alms to the poor an.d behaves gently and kindly to all about him in an endeavor to pacify the gods and persuade them to lengthen his life. To ?cc a mon key in tho morning is an evil omen, and it signifies that the day will be a bad one for trade. All of these omens have palliations, and tho wise Malay usually takes each one ns n warning of danger or misfortune that may bo in part if not wholly avoided, j ' Our Ugly Ancestors.
