THE WAYCEOSS WEEKLY
ASKED TO JOIN
VIGILANCE COMMITTEE
MOVEMENT STARTED BY TH
LAW AND GRDER LEAGUE.
Savannah, July 1st.—A larfe Hum-
•* ber of Savannahlans have been asked
to join a vigilance committee for the-
purpose of seeing that the laws
the state and municipality are enforc-
ed. The movement to this end was
started by the Law and Order League.
It is not proposed to follow/the exam
ple of the Vigilants of directly after
the war and endeavor, to right wrongs
by. force but it Is the purpose of the
Vigilance Committee to investigate
violations of the law and to encourage
juries by their presence in the court
rooms during the trials to find verdicts
in accordance with the law and evi
dence. Mr. W. B. Stubs a prominent
lawyer and representative of the Anti-
Saloon League and the Law and Or
der League sent out letters inviting
certain Savannahlans to jqin the Vig
ilance Committee.
YOUNG MAN
SUCIDE
PROSPECT8 FOR PP.08PERITY.
In an interview in New York o
Monday Mr.. W. B.~ Stillwell of this
city said, among other things: ‘T was
impressed with' the splenJid condition
of the crops throught the West. All
the way from Savannah ta Minnesota
the harvests were rich, and this in
part makes the people more cheerful.'
Mr. Stillwell had been attending the
National Lumber-Manufacturers Asso
ciation in Minneapolfs.
The Impression of Mr. Stillwell re
specting the outlook for good crops is
that of other observers. The travel
ing men in this section, for instance,
say that the corn and cotton In South
Georgia never looked more promising
than at present. Unless something
happens to give them a setback the
crops of both corn and cttn in thia.
part f the South will be abunJanl
The fruit crops, now being gathered
are in every respect satisfactory, and
the prices are being received are yield
ing a profit. The transportation com
panies are beginning to feel the im
provement in business. Several of
_them in the South have announced
that there will be not cut in wages
and others hnve greatly increased
their forces. By November the effects
of the panic will, there is reason now
for thinking, have almost disappeared.

MILWAUKEE CONCERN
INCREASES FORCE
BIO SHOPS ARE PRACTICALLY
RUNNING IN FULL TIME.
Milwaukee, July l.—W. H. White-
side, president of the AHic Chambers
- Co., which has the great $5,000,000
shops here declares that they have
been forced to Increase their force
of employes steadily for the last sev
eral weeks, during the last ninety days
there has been an increase of from
thirty to fifty per cent in new orders.
Today the plant Is running on practi
cally full time, employing all men that
were working before the 1907 troubles.
Other concerns are showing the same
condition.
DEED COMMITTED IN REAL ES
TATE OFICE.
New Orleans, July 1.—Ernest Jou-
bert, aged 20, last night drew’ a re
volver and fired through his left breast
causing instant death. The deed was
committed in the real estate office of

FATE OF R. R. COMMISSION,
Atlanta, June 30.—While the ques
tion of remodeling the .State Railroad
Commission, reducing its membership
from five to threw-and abolishing tno
office of special attorney, has not yet
taken (iny definite shape in the Gen
eral Assembly,- it is just now an ex
tensively talked of problem, and^he
appearanec of a bill dealing with the
matter is expected within a few days.
The Senate last year agreed to a
commission of five members by a mar
gin of only two votes. Since then the
Democratic convention bas declared
for a reduction and elimination
the special attorney, apposition which
Gov. Smith gave to Judge James K.
Hines, a former noted Popyllst.
So far as'the Senate is concerned,
It is thought there will Le little diffi
culty in amending the law so as to
reduce the membership, but the at
titude of the House is as yet proble
matical. However, the Legislature
has lost much of the refbrm spirit
that characterized its first session and
it is said the passage of such an
amendment would by no means be so
difficult as some might suppose.

the legislature planned for Friday to
Chattanooga, tor the purpose of in
specting the state road and celebrat
ing the Fourth, received a death blow

THE PRINCETON LEADER 8AY8
OF THE INDIAN BASEBALL TEAM.

evidenced themselves and the Indi

Already the company has shipped
probably forty or fifty carloads peach

and delicious Georgia Belles, and will
now begin the shipment of the main
crop—the Elberfoa—really the un
crowned queen of the orchard.
For the Elberta te unapproached
and altogether unapproachable.
Mr. W. F. Me Ree, of the orchard
company, stated yesterday that ten
carloads of Elbertas would bo ship
ped from Bagley tomorrow, and that
during the week he hoped to forward
least forty caVloads. The total
may even exceed that number.
This company has fine demands for
Its fruit, orders coming yesterday from
many localities and prices are holding
up well.

CHATTANOOGA TRIP
TEMPORARILY OFF.
The proposed legislative trip to
Chatanooga, which was to have engag
ed the general assembly next Friday j
and Saturday, has been abandoned
for the present Neither the house
nor the senate will visit the Tennes
see city on those rays.mentioned, but
both will remain In Atlanta.
The action of the Senate In recon
sidering Its previous action and non
concurring in In the joint resolution
providing the trip* made it impossible
fog the lower branch to take the trip.'
The plan contemplated an adjourn
ment of three days—Friday, Saturday
and Sunday—and neither branch can
legally w adjourn more than two days
without the consent of the other.
However,i the idea of- the trip has
not been abandoned altogether, and it
Is more than likely that the legis
lature as a body will visit Chattanooga
and inspect the state's property In
that city before the present session
is over.

One of the prettiest scenes that
ever took place In a political conven
tion occured Tuesday at the close of
the eloquent nominating speech of
Judge H. D. D. Twiggs, in which he
named Hon u Joseph M. Brown as the
standard-bearer of the Democracy of
Georgia. Mrs. Brown accompanied
by her children, occupied the box next
to the stage, immediately every Ban-
ner held by the great concourse of
delegates whs carried over to her,
which she gracefully-and becomingly
accepted bowing her thanks with the
true southern demeanor. The Im
mense audience was en its feet cheer
log tor many minutes. The scenes
was touching, deeply to, and many an
eye was moist showing that those who
attended political conventions are
not only human, but also have hearts
that at* appreciative of all that Is
noble and best In manhood and charm
ing and graceful In true womanhood.
