THE WAVCR03& WEEKLY:
A CALL OP PATRIOTISM*
S*vannah News Comments on Brent*
ley's Letter.
Bon. Win. O. Brentier bee written
eery etron* letter which appears
tbs News of recent dels. That paper
comments on the otter as follows:
Why there Is orient need for the
preserratlno of the Democratic party
In Its pristine lateerlty Is made clear
In the succinct and forceful, paper
Representative Brantley which
publish In another column ot this mor
aine's paper. The course of argument
-taken by Mr. Brantley Is that which
■he Morning News has followed since
the day of the election. In brief, the
conclusion Is that the country now,
more than erer, stand In need of
strong and virile Democracy based
apon the old and tried principles
adapted to present-day conditions.
There hsve been suggestions of a sot*
tlonal Democracy, dominated by and
eonslstlng of r.10 South, anj bolding
the balance of power. That position
we do not think to be tenablo. Waal
Is wanted Is a national Democracy,
having as Its corner stone the tenet
of the greatest good for the greatost
number and selecting Its candidates
from among the strongest available
adherents to pure Democratic doctrine
without consideration of geographical
or sectional lines.
Meanwhile, as we have said before
it seems to us that tho time Is ripe for
the South to step to the front and
demand and secure Its Just proportion
of authority In the council of the party
Tho South has remained true to the
party through many discouraging
yoars. During this time tho South has
naked little ond received less. It has
deferred to the Bast and the West, and
soen written Into the platforms
planks that It disapproved and noml
nation male that It would have pre
ferred not made. Having abundantly
demonstrated Its loyalty and patrio
tism In losing campaigns In which It
had no directing voice. It seems only
lair and right that the South should
be given the opportunity to dlrct a
campaign of unqualified Democracy.
As Mr. Brantley points out, the Dem
ocracy lost the last campaign because
It had wandered to new and untried
doctrines In which the people lacked
confidence, and because the nominee-
clean, honest, able and patriotic un
questionably—was a man whom the
people weren ot prepared to trust Im
plicitly: not because of their lack of
confidence In or admiration for him
as a man, but for the reason that be
advocated Innovations of which they
were afraid. His election would have
stimulated the demand for those Inno-
. rations, and the people were not satis-
fled that they would be tor the beat
Interests of the country. The rote In
tho recent election was not one of con-
fldenco In and support of Republican
ism so much as It was one of a lack
of confidence In the Democratic plan
as presented under the auspices offer.
lag It.
As we have already seen, tho Repub
licans are assuming that /he olectlon
was an endowment of their party's
eilravegances, lla colonial policy. Its
favoritism towards p riveted Interests,
Its spirit of militarism. Its sectional
ism In legislation, and. In Short, the
continuation of Its Iniquities which
havo aroused so great a storm of pro-
. tesl.lt Is practically a foregone con-
' elusion that whatever tariff revision
may occur at the extra session will be
In the way of Increasing tho burdens
of ^he masses for the benefit of the
classes. Four years hence, therefore,
there will be a still greater and more
Insistent cry for a change In the gov
ernment and for the relief of the pjm-
pie. And the Democracy should pre
fers for Just the condition of affairs,
■y offering a return to sate and sound
rtnctploa, without the handicap of
Isms’ or new and untried doctrines,
and we think that that could best be
effected by a strong national, not sec
tional, Democracy built up under
Southern leadership.
