Sincv th,. middle of October, gradual increase in the number of immigrants has been npticeable, and la that mont.i, for the first time since the beginning 0 f the year, immigra tion has exceeded immigration. The record number of immigrants arriv-i lng in this country In one day was reached in December, when more than 6,00o steerage passengers arriv ed in New York in five steamships. -The total number of steerage pas sengers brought over this year Is 386,174.
