NEAR DEATH
Chicago, Mir. ft—Charles K. (Par
son) Davies, the veteran sporting
man, la critically III at the home of
relatives In this city, nnd the end In
believed to be but n question of days.
He suffered a stroke of paralysis In
New Orleans about two years ago.
and since then his health haa been
steadily falling. Since hla present
condition became known countless
messages of sympathy and cheer have
poured In upon him from sporting
men of the world over.
Fifteen or twenty years ago when
he was at the height of his career,
‘Parson" Davies was known by prob
ably more sporting men and follow
ers of prize fighting than any other
man in the world, he managed nearly
every prize fighter of any note. He
was probably best known to the sport
ing world as the manager of John I*.
Sullivan, lie managed Sullivan when
the latter was mowing down bis op-
ponets with one swing of bis giant
arm. it was the “parson" who
brought Peter Jackson from Australia
to America and he also looked after
the affairs of Jack Dempsey when he
held the world's middleweight cham
pionship. Other fighters who owed
n great deal or their sucess to the
shrewdness of Davlea Included Tom
my Ryan. Joe Chovnakl. and Jack
Burke, “the Irish Ud."
For the past ten or twelve yearn
the ‘Parson" haa not been active in
*ing affairs and the thouaaada of dol
lars ho hag made out of the sport
have slipped through Ills Angora until
he has little left. A few years ago
he started a billiard hall In New
Orleans, hut Ids venture wn* not a
great success.
