Atlanta, Go., Jufy 1.—Judge Hart’s
announcement as a candidate for gov
ernor seems to have had the effect
stirring ail Governor Brown's
friends to action throughout the state.
The governor has received letters
from neurly every section in Georgiu
during the last few days. Clubs are
being formed spontaneously, old
are being reorganized, and the fullest
assurances of his re-election are be
ing given. The best reports como
from the country counties. Indicat
ing that the farmer voter believes in
“15-cent cotton nnd Brown." In ail
the reports received by the governor
there is not one indicating any nota
ble loss from his ranks, while from
nearly every county comes reports
that prominent me n who have for
merly been for Smith will stand for
Brown this year.
The folowtng are a few excerpts
from communications received dur-
the past two days:
Colquitt County—although I am
sorry that ho (Mr. Smith) finally de
cided lo make the race, for business
will almost be suspended all over the
state for the next sixty days, but 1
feel sure that he will be beaten worse
than two years ago. I have heard a
good many here i'n tflPfty today say
that he would be boated and some of
them were (or him two ycare ago,
and one in particular who signed the
petition from here sometime ago aoK
Ing him to run.
Dalton bounty—You can count on
Walton county to •come ap with
much larger vote than laat time.
Newnan—I believe old Georgia will
come, up properly at the primary and
give you a autlatactory majority.
Glynn county—I feel quite confident
Mr. imlth will be defeated far worse
than In the Drat Inatance. i
Johnson <£unty—Personally being
In a position to hear conalderable ar
gument nnd dlscuaslon about the gub
ernatorial campaign, many expressions
have come to pit nnd this office and
while I admit that there are aome
Hoke Smith supporters In thls ( countr,
yet, I boneatly believe, Judging from
the reports that you will get a bet-
tar rote In this county than you did
two years ago.
A' small tffwn l n Caroll county—
Thla Is a small place and then are
only 30 votes pnd you will gat It of
them, 1 think, ln the lost election
you get 8 and Smith 21.
Troup county—It looks'now aa It
Troup Intends to quit sinking and re
turn to her father's house. There
seems to be no enthusiasm among tfe
Hoke Smith men, nearly all of them
regret that he has consented to make
the race.
Houston county—I am genuinely
surprised tbet he baa "yielded" af
ter thrice declining. 1 thought be
was sincere In Is first declaration.
It goes without saying that I and
your other friends here will aupport
you in thla campaign. Today, with
out any affort to secure such Infor
mation, I learned that four prominent
men who were strong for Smith In the
1908 campaign, have declared their
Intention to wte for Drown this year,
and there arflktbers. Houston v^tjl
surely go for Brawn,
From a- former JJoh* Smith man
(a prominent Booth Georgia drum
mer)—I nets that you will have op
position for a second term. If I can
ha of any service to you command I
er here than y:u were two-years ago.
I have Inquired around and find that
Smith lms loat some of bis most act
ive supporters.
Ujwln county—l think that we will
carry Irwin county this time, ns ail
of your friends in thla section arc lin
ing up In good shape.
Wilkes county—Mr. Smith does not
seem to realise that he wna defeated
before, anil It will ho necessary to
convince him with a still more crush
ing defeat.
Dodgo county—So far as this sec
tion of wire grass Georgia Is concern
ed you have nothing to fear from
again going before the people for an
endorsement of your administration.
Oor county, J am sure, will go for
you by a Jarger majority than It did
two years ago.
Banka cqpmy—My father nnd tour
brothers are for you.
Decatur county—While we confi
dently believe you will be re-elected,
we shall work as bard as we did
when you first made the race before
the politicians learned the mettle yp.»
had.
Lowndes county—Your chance
aeema better than they were In 1908
Baldwin county—We hnve certain
ly lost no ground her,. ,
Charlton county—You can depend
on our little county being If the Joe,
Borwn column. I think .that 'Govern
or smith's friends will line up with
us this time.
Polk county—You will -carry thl*
county two to one easy. - .
tones county—Your frlenda In thin,
county are taking un acilvc part'for
yon. /
Telfair county—Three/men from IB*
country, on the day of SmltVs an
nouncement, were In fny office and'
stated that two years ago they voted
for Mr/ Smith, but this time they
would support Governor Brown. I have -
beard, others expresf- themselves In
like manner. You will carry this-
county.
Washington county—It looks verjr
much like Brown down thla way..
Stewart county—Wo expect to car
ry this county for you.
Waltoh county—'The county wllfgo
for yof In about the same proportion
is It did before.
ware county—Your friend* her* ere
In the aaddle.
which-Convention shall proceed to mf. Wo win take care of you in |
the nomination of n candidate for Con- J South Georgia.
