the newspapers, seems to have gone

mobile races—perhaps the most expen
sive farces of sports ever devised by
the idle rich are on the program of
almost every day in almost every

Third Ward in the coming municipal
election to be held December 1910. As
sured ag I am of the votes of many
friends who have know n me for years,
and believing many of those who

where the receipts from the sale of
tickets reach a sum to stagger the
minds o fthose who ca Q not help, but
feel appalled at the spirit of extrava
gance that dominates modern life.
Even in the smaller cities the well-
to-do classes attempt to live upon a
scale that would have been deemed
the height of folly by our fathers, working man.
There is a great wall creeping over j
the country about the high cost of
living. The bare necessities of life
are almost beyond the purses of the
average wage earner. It Is possible
that this "high cost of living" Is pro
duced by the fact that so many are
trying to live too high? Where are
the producers? Certainly of all those
vast crowds who attend the various
sporting events above mentioned,
there are but few who contribute any
thing toward the reduction of the cost
of living. Most of them are simply
parasites upon the economical body
of this republic and the growth and
increasing number of this class of id
lers |g what has really brought about
the elevation In the cost of simple ne
cessities. This country needs less
sporting events and more real work

day two men who died of alcoholism
were placed in the show windows oi
an undertaking establishment as an
object lesson in the effort to carry the
town for prohibition. It failed. We
have been a life-long prohibitionists,
but If we were a citizen of that Wash
ington town we would have voted wet.
We could not have voted with such
