AUSTRIANS DEFEAT SERVIANS IN BIG BATTLES era UJ ETJ I^J JTJT] Germany Prepares to Go to Aid of Austria; Belgrade is Occupied by Austrians-1,000 Men Killed in Battle Ware County Slaton Club Stands Pat Publications to Contrary Are False After a desperate effort upon $hi part of the opposition of Gov. Slatou to weaken the strong organization of Ills supporters In this oounty It ap pears that the opposition has done nothing but show their own weak ness, and to make Slaton stronger. It has been published that three men who were named upon the Sla ton Campaign Committee were supporting Slaton, but were support ing Congressman Hardwick. It is now proven that this report Is as false as many others that the opposition have published, and possibly will continue to publish. The Wayoross Herald made It ap pear that Dr. R. P. Islar, Dr. J. H. Latimer, and Mr. John Furlong, who were named on the Slaton Committee, were not members of the Slaton Club, and were not supporting Gov. Slaton. The falseness of this la shown by the following statements from these gentlemen. Dr. R. P. Islar said, "You may sa> for me that owing to an anticipated absence from the city between now and the election that I do not care to act aa vice president of the Slaton Club. OF WHICH I AM A MEMBER. Dr. J. H. Latimer said: “I km not taking an active part in politics. No representative of the Herald hat spoken to me relative to the Slaton campaign. I reserve the right to vote for whom 1 please." Mr. John Furlong gave the Journal the following atatement: "WaycroBs Journal, City. "Please say for mo that I am sup porting Gov. Slaton for United States Senator, notwithstanding reports to the contrary. , "Yours truly, "JOHN FURLONG.' By the statements of these gentle men It will be seen that they are all anpporters of Gov. Slaton, and that while they do not care to be active In thla campaign, yet they are going to vote to help SEND 8LATON TO THE SENATE. BE EFFECTED WITH BUT FEW CHANGES Advices reaching Waycross today from a reliable source Indicate that the plans for reorganizing the Atlan ta, Birmingham and Atlantic will bo effected at §n early date with but few changes as comp&red to the pres ent management The proposed change in name will not be made, It Is reported. Whet the road waa sold It was generally undehstood that the A. B. & A. would be known In future as the Georgia. Alabama and Western. Steps are being taken to get the load in the very best condition pos- aible. and reports say that the plans inaugurated after the sale of the roa.» are meeting with huge success. Th* A. B. k A. STUDIES, NOT GRADES IS PROMOTION PLAN When the city board of educatiou meets in August several important matters will be discussed and dis posed of, chief among them a recom mendation Supt A. G. Miller expects to make concerning promotions. He has investigated the subject*oarefully and will suggest to the board that in future promotions be made by studies and not by grades. Under his plan a pupil falling In one or two studies could continue with the advanced studies lyfclch were passed satisfactorily, maklpg up the studies'In which he failed either by outside work or by attendlbi; classes. The plan is used to advantage In a number or schools, and Is said keep many pupils In school who af ter falling of promotion under the present plan do not return to school. For graduation a certain number of units are necessary In high school, and by the arrangement Supt. Miller favors failure In on# particular study will not hold back a pupil's advance ment. The plan that has been used here compelled a pupil falling to In every study to go over the work passed successfully as well aa going over the work not passed satisfactor ily, which Is regarded as uqnless.
