canal, to Kiel, accompanied hr *

of the Hohensoltern. which led the
way.
Kiel Is the chief naval port on the
Baltic. It la 70 mllea from Hamburg
and ita harbor la big enough to float
all the warships In the world. It la
11 miles long, 4 1-S miles wide at Us
mouth, and a quarter of a mile wlda
at the south end. It has a uniform
depth of water of 40 feet. At Kiel
thera are Imperial docks, ship-build
tug yards, and basins large enough
to bold the biggest draadnaughta. The
name of Kiel goea back to the tenth
century. Then It waa apelled Kyi, and
meant a safe place for ahlpe. It la
very strongly fortlflsd, having two
forts at the entrance on Its western
slds and four forts on the east side.
At the Elbe entrance to the canal
la the town of Brunabuttel and from
that point on aa far west aa the Neth
erlands frontier, there are a string of
Immensely powerful forts which guard
the entrance to the Rivera Elbe and
Weser and Etna and particularly pro
tect Wllhetmahaven, the great naval
port of .the North Sea, Bremerhaven
and further Inland. Hamburg and
Bremen.
In front of the mouth of the Elbe
are sand banks an din front of thse*

Sea to the Baltic, while to go around

HONDURAS SEND MONET.
Washington, D. C. t Sept, a.—Two
contributions to the Swiss relief fund
reached the legation here today from
Bwlaa soldiers In Tegucigalpa, Hon
duras. As they were not called to ser
vice on account of the time It would
take to get from Central America

Augusta, Sept. 3.—The Augusta Fac
tory, with its hundreds of hands,
started work yesterday after a months
Idleness, and now every cotton mill In
the city Is running on full time.
The cotton mill men of Augusta are
extremely optimistic. They feel they
will have markets for their goods In
South America, Africa and Asia, and
they are buying cotton rapidly at 8
cents a pound.
