The Weatherwax Quartet one among the very best male quar tets in America will be the opening number. Miss Kate McPipkin, after a short visit to friends In the city, returned to her home in Jesup today. Rev. D. B. Sweat, of Florida, form erly a resident of Waycross, is regis tered at the New Phoenix today. Mrs. V. L. Stanton returned yester day from a visit to Newnan and At lanta. Mr. Alex Walker returned yester day from a trip to New York and oth er Eastern points. Mr. Alex Lowther has returned from a two weeks stay in New York and other cities. Mrs. W. E. Chandler returned ye terday from a visit to relatives Ocala, Fla. The many friends of Col. John W. Bennett will regret to learn that he is confined to his home with fever. Mrs. May Bower and little Miss Varina Bower are spending a few days in the city from Cogdell and are guests of Mrs. J. L. Walker. Mrs. C. H. Munch and Master Claries Munch who have been the quests of Mrs. Munch's sister, Mrs. W. B. Goodrich, have returned to thefr home in Jenson, Fla. Mrs. G. C. Cole has returned from a visit to Savannah, where she was called by the illness of her son. Dr. . Cole. Friends of Dr. Cole will be glad to learn that he is improving. ‘Sock Social** Saturday Afternoon. day afternoon at the residence of Mrs. H. D. The little Invitations have created much pleasurable interest and a large number of guests is expected. About 200 invitations have been is sued. W. C. T. U. The W. C. T. U. held the regular meeting Wednesday at the Y. M. C. A. porlors. While the attendance was not unusually large the meeting was a very interesting one. The meeting was in charge of Mrs. Crawford, the vice president, In the absence of the president, who is sick. The talk by Mrs. Benton on tem perance in the Sunday Schools and by Mrs. Steel on temperance and mis sions were very fine and much en Joyed by those present. Birmingham, Ala., Oct. 22.—An at tempt was made last night to wreck the southbound Cincinnati-New Or leans Limited on the Queen & Cres cent Railroad, a few miles south of Birmingham, by placing a rail across the track. ’ The engine was derailed and the passengers received a severe shaking up, but no one was seriously Injured.
