TIED DUCK WITH HIS CRAVAT
'‘Left Diamond Stud on It, and That
May Account for Turkey
. Find.
[ Cuero, Tex.—~What Thomas Lovett
of this county belleves to be the previ
ous history of the recent story from
Chicago telling of a diamond stud
valued at $l5O found in the craw of a
Thanksgiving turkey, had its inception
in a duck hunt here,
According to Lovett's story, while
hunting two years ago he slightly
wounded a duck and declded to carry
the bird home. He used his necktie to
bind the bird's feet, neglecting to re
move a dlamond stud fastened therein,
Placing the supposedly helpless bird
in the rear of his conveyance, he start
ed home, when a flutter a few minutes
later attracted his attention, He turned
in time to see the duck flying off with
his necktie dangling from its feet,

MARRIAGE AND ITS MEANING:
Happiness Only an Incident, its Real
Purpose Is Protection of Fam
ily ldea.
“The individualist belleves that hap
piness is the purpose of marriuge,”
writes Margaret Deland.
“The purpose of marriage is the pro
tection of the family idea. Happiness
and marriage may go together; God
send they do! But if the incident. of
happiness is lost, duty remains; she
obligation of contract remafhs; mar
riage remains—it remains, even though
for profoundly righteous reaspns the
princlpals have seen fit to separate by
the width of the world. ‘
“Marriage is civilization’s method of
remalning civilized. It is deep with_
the elemental human pulses of life for
generations which are to come; it 18
solemn with its opportunities of spirit
ual lnnlglzt through suffering; it is
dreadful With its sense of responsi
bility for the ideal of permanence,
which makes us men and women and |
not beasts; an ideal which we are to
hand on, like a torch, from heart to
heart, from soul to soul!
