town with enough red blood coursing
through its arteries to support a
newspaper with a sports column.
There are about a dozen cities
which serve as ticker centers scatter
ed throughout the country, To each
of them a direct wire runs from the
diamond carrying the news of the
game. Sitting before a keyboard in
each ticker center is a girl who puts

Be on the safe side
when you buy
All gasolines look alike. .. but you
can be sure of getting the highest
quality gasoline and motor oils
from any Pan-Am dealer. He
is a man you can depend on.
HOW do you buy other things that
look much alike? By brand and from
dealers you can depend on . .. of course.
That's the sensible way to buy ne
and motor oils, too. Bxperhrwej motor
ists have found that it pays to ask for
Pan-Am. This better gasoline costs no
more than the ordinary kind.
4And when you buy at the cream-colored
on the eircuit the messages which
come flashing to her from the dia
mond. Each ticker center dissemi
nates the news to thousands of tick
ers in the adjacent territory where
it is read by part of the waiting mil
lions,
Then there are the bulletin boards.
By means of them the fans see the
details of the game as they transpire
on the field. They see them throug:
the eyes of a Western Union man
who for years has been describing
world’s series games for the millions,
He is Edson S, Brewster who sits in
the press box at the world’s series
clashes. Before him is a master key.
From this key there speeds an im
pulse that zigzags across the con
tinent multiplying every now and
then into double, triple, or quadruple
waves going to every city of any im-.
portance in the United States and
Canada. From important centers
other impulses branch here and there
like the network of a spider reaching
practically every town and village
in English speaking North America.
Mr. Brewster is both baseball ex
pert and manipulator of the master
key which flashes the events of the
game from coast to coast, His fingers
work with his eye. What his eye sees
his fingers tick off on the busy key.
What his fingers tick off goes in
stantly to distant cities where auto
matic repeaters take it up and flash
it on to other cities as it wings its
way across the continent. Before
many of the fans assembled at the
Polo Grounds or other diamonds
know that the pitcher has put one
over the plate the fans out in Salt
Lake City or Kalamazoo know that
the umpire has called it a strike. The
fans present at the games have other
distractions and details of the play
often escape them. But Mr. Brew
ster can have no distractions. He
must watch the game and watch it
closely and make an instant report
to his invisible audience as they
watch the lights flash on and off on
the scoreboards before them.
Noiseless Auction
A nolseless auction 18 the latest
boon to mankind that has come out
of Holland. It sounds impossible, but
the scheme is simple. Bverybody
who attends the auction and wants to
bid 18 provided with a seat. Each
chair is numbered, and connected
with wires to a big dlal on the auc
tioneer’s platform, On the dlal are
numbers representing prices from the
lowest to the highest amounts.
When the sale begins, the auction
eer describes his wares, and then calls
for bids. The hand on the dial on the
platform starts to move up the range
of prices, and whenever any ‘bidder
wants to drop out, he signals such by
pressing the button on his chalr,
When all have dropped out but one,
a bell rings and a light flashes on the
dial board, and the highest bid 18 thus
ascertained without any noise or con
tusion.

Unseen Sources *
of Long Life
The basic sources of automobile
value are not always apparent to
the eye,
A motor car, like a house, may
LOOK a great deal more substan
tial than it really is,
Because of this difficulty, more and
more thousands are turning to Dodge
Brothers product for insurance
against disappointment.
The years have proved, and each
year proves anew, that Dodge
Brothers are as deeply concerned
with the UNSEEN goodness of their
motor car as with the seen,
The mileage it will deliver, the
safety it will provide, the expense and
trouble it will save the owner over
a period of years, are quite as im
portant to Dodge Brothers as the
more obvious details of equipment
and style,
