A NEV ORLEANS SENSATIOA. |
= 3
George W. Cable’s stories of vou« :
douism in Louiriara are not en-|
tirely the product of his imagina-|
tion. ‘
Hereaiter Mr. Cable will beable
to prove that his uncanny yurns |
have a very sclid foundation ini
tact. ;
The New Orleans papers of last |
Wednesday contain &n almost iusi
credible account of the voudou !
orgies on St. Anthony street. It
seems that for some time past the |
residents in that locality have been 1
scandalized by the disorderly con
duct of the inmates of a certain
house owned Ly a negro woman.
About once a week alalf-hreed
wvoudou doctor named Alexander
wisited the house, where he was in
the hahit of meeting his patients.
On such occasiors the crowd gave
utterance to the most dismal Lowls
and chants imaginable,
Finally the attention of the pos
lice was called to the nuisance, and
an officer with a large force sur
rounded the house. When the
captain entercd he was simply par
alyzed by what he saw. Defore
him were twentysfive persons,
fifteen white women and ten ne
groes, and in their midst stood Al
exander lustily shouting a vondou
incantation. The doctor wore silk
tights; the negro men were lying
on the floor Lalf dressed, and the
women in a worse than decollette
condition were sitting in chairs
around the room.
Recovering himself, the police
eaptain ordered the crowd to march
to the station house. The women
begged permission to make their
toilets, and in a few minutes start
ed out gu'ded by the oflicers.
They were handsomely dressed,
and were undoubtedly respectable.
At the station house, when the wo
men, some of them young and
pretty, gave their names, it
was found that they were
people of standing, The wo
men wept when they were locked
up, and claimed that they knew
nothing of the disreputable charac
ter of the house in which they were
captured. All gave the same exs
planation. They were suffering
from varions ailments, real or im
aginary, and the hideous voudou
doctor had fascinated them. They
had participated in Ins seances un
til they were afraid to remain away
fearing that they would be the vies
tims of some evil spell. Gradually
they had yielded to the will of their
repulsive master until they asso
ciated with the vilest of the vile,
and witnessed spectacles that would
have shocked them before they
made the acquaintance of the vou
dou doctor.
Of course the women were not
detained long. They were paroled
to appear on the following day,
and it is probable that the affair
will be dealt with very lightly. |
The fact that voudouism has
reached such a climax in New
Orleans speaks for itselt. Itshows
that superstition is not dead even
in our centers of civilization; and
it shows, too, that an inferior race
is much more likely t» drag down
a superior race than to be elevated
by contact with it.
It is to be hoped that Alvxmh‘
der will be put behind the bars.
Constitution.
A New Mode of Executing Crimimauls ';
The state of New York has Jead
oft in what is determined to be a
reform in the mode of inflicting the |
death penalty on criminals. 'l‘ho!
old metfiod of hanging it is claimed
is eruel and inhuman; and no doubt
horrible scenes have occurred from
this cause. While it is deemed
necessary to inflict the death pen
alty on certain classes of crimnals,
cruelty as far as possible should be
avoided.
Electricity is the agent by which
the death penalty is hereafter to be
inflicted in New York. It is claimed
that by means of this agent death
will be instantaneous ; and thus lar
it will undoubtedly bea retorm
over hanging. There will doubtless
at first be some mis2arriages ; but
we are inclived to think the new
method will be an improvement
over hanging and that it will prove
a real reform.

UNAPPRECIATIVE.
How little we are apt to appreciate that which
we possess. The hardy wood-sawyer envies the
wealth of his employer. The rich man envies the
health and strength of his poor neighbor.
“QOur mind and our time we employ
In longing for what vi®have not,
Unmindful of what we enjoy.”
How much better if all exerted themselves to ob
tain their heart’s longing. If poor in purse seck to
gain wealth by industrious and frugal habits. If
poor in health seek to use these remedies which are
the best and truest medicines. Among remedies
sold by druggists none is the equal of Dotanic
Blood Dalm for curing the ills of flesh and blood.
Felix Foster, Atlania, Ga., says: “I took B.R.
8., for several foul ulcers, which had given mo
much trouble and would not heal from a use &
ULCERS other remedies. Within ten days my
health improved, and before I had
used three bottles every sore was entirely healed. It
improved my appetite and gave me flesh and
strength.”
Hudson Clark, Camden, Ark., says! “I wasaf
f { flicted with the severest form
BAJ BLO&D of rheumatism for about 12
years, and sulfered extreme miscry during all that
while, [ also had catarrh so bad it almost stopped
c ATARE‘ H my breathing through my nose.
i My flesh in some places looked as
if it had been charred or scalded. My back was so
lame I could hardly stand. 1 tried nearly every-
HHEUMA'”SM thing but found no relief
until [ tried B. B. B, I used
several bettles and am now as scund and well as
any man in Arkansas,”
J. W. Messer, Howell’s Cross Roads, Cherokea
County, Ga.. writes: I was afflicted with chronic
SORES sores nine years, and had tried many
medicines and they did me no good, |
then tried B. B. 8., and eight bottles cured me
sound and well” ©
