It is right here with us, and in

Tue Brown-Sequard elixir is not
coming up to sanguine expecta

not make the old heart feel young,

only elixir of life at last.
Worthy of Discussion.
Now that the public school bill
bhase passed the legislature and will
soon be submitted to the people ot
our city, we anticipate more or less
controversy. The News, with its
usual liberality, cordially extends
its columns to both sides. It isa
queetion of sgame impert,and should
be thoroughly ventilated. \Ve are

The Coiumbus Southern. 4
We direct attention to the cor
respoudence between Hon. O. B.
Stevens and Hon. W. A. Little,
which appears in this issue of th®
News. The subject is full of
importance and interest to all the
subscribers to the stozk of the Co.
lumbus Southern railway. Capt.
Little is a gentleman of known in~
tegrity and bis words carry with
them great weight. and he says the
road is being pushed to a speedy
comp:etion.
Many of our'readers are subscri
‘bers tu the stock of the company,
“and fitty per cent. of the subscrib
; ed stock is due and has been legal
% ly called in by the directors. Quite
‘2 uumber of persons in cur com~
- munity have paid up this fifty per
| cent.; but some have hesitated
; about paying till they felt sure that
the road would be built. There
seems to be no valid reason to de
lay longer on this account, or any
other; and the authorities ot the
road are anxious to get in at once
the fifty per cent. of the stock
now due, 30 that they may ex
penc the ssme in procuring cross
ties to be put down between Rich~
land and Albany. Several citi
zeng of our ccunty have made cons
tracts for furnishing the road with
! crossties and are now getting them
i in readiness.
The notes given by the subscri
bers in Terrell and Webster coun
ties are in the hands of Major B.
H Hood, oue of the hoard of di~
rectors,and he is diliigently attends
ing to the collection of them.
He states that be has been notified
to urge the prompt payment of the
fifty per cent. now dueon these
notes and he trusts that the sub.
seribers will come forward and
cettle at once. Neither he nor
the company desires to have to re
sort to legal measures to coerce
payment, believing that our peo
ple will voluntarily meet these
payments in the same spirit ot
liberality and promptoess which
actuated them when they subs
seribed to the stock of this rail
roaa which will add so much to the
prosperity of Dawsen and of the
entire section through which it
will run.' |
No Depot Yet.
The Central railroad authorities
expres:ed their intentions, some
time ago, of building a new depot
in this city, even going so far
as toreceive bids for its erection.
As yet no movement has been
‘made towards the work, and it
; would seem that the idea has been
abandoned. ‘They probably think
that ‘‘a thing ot beauty is a_ joy
forever,” and want to hang on to
the present lovely edifice as long
a 8 possible, Tt is an attractive
building, it is true, but we think
we might have as good a depot as
Shellman or Bronwood.
Let our liberal citizens start a
subscription list, build a depot and
show the Central how to be enters

Negro Tramps Bulldeze Conductor Hall |
Tues-ay Night* i '
I'wo negro tramps forced a ride |
on the cannon ball trein h'oml
Mountgomery last Tuesday night]
by covering conductor Hall with
a double-barrelled gun aud a re
volver.
As the train pulled away from
Shellman two negroes jumped on
the front platform of the baggage
2ar, determined to lorce a ride to
Dawson. The porter of the train
saw them, and stepped ovt to make
the tramps jump off before the
train got uuder headway. Ashe
stepped out of the car door, be was
covered by a double-barrelled gun
ai.d a revolver, in the hands of the
two negro tramps, and was told
that he would be kill dif heopened
hiz mouth.
Cenductor Hall, after going
through the train collecting tickets,
went through the baggage car and
out on the platform to see that
everything was all ri:ht. He was
not prepared tor i diffienlty and
was completely powerless when,
stepping out of the car, he too
was covered and told to stop or he
would certainly be killed. One of
the negroes said: “CUaptain, you
bad better not try to do anything,
for we are determined to ride to
Dawson.”
“Well, Icantell you,” sail the
corductor,‘‘yon are acting in a way
to get into serioug trouble, and you
wou't rirle on this tr.in in that man
ner.”
“Well, I'll 'be—if we don't. and
if you move you will be killed!”
Conductor Hall stood and taiked
to them until the train slowed up
at Grave’s Station, whep both of
the Negroes suddenly jumped off
the train into the busnes, Hall
said he could not see them after
the train stopped, but when the
train again started oft they jumped
on to the rear plaifrom ot the train,
and before Conductor Hall could
get back to them they had tied the
door with the bell cord. Hall then
armed himself and started *o open
the little slide door in the rear car
door and open fira upon them but
he was appealed to by the passen
gers to let them aloue, for fear they
shou'd fireinto the passenger coach~
es,
When the train drew near Daw
gon the tramps again jumped off,
and were seen no more,

only they could secure houses.
Why do not some of our moneyed
