WiLL the esteersed Constitution
permit us to offer the suggestion
that, if practicable, it would be far
more pleasurable to its readers to
give them Miss Orelia Key Bell s
sonnets to Mrs. Livingston Mims
in one heroic dose, rather than
extend them through the year in
broken doses.
TuE original story of the “lone
widow of pine knot cotiage,” ina
recent issue of the Cuthbert Enter
prise, touched a very tender chord
in our hearts,a chord that had been
silent ever since reading that story
in the fourth reader about @fteen
years azo. |
An exchange tells of an Ohio
man who mortgaged his wifea pair
of diamomd ear rings. The wife
took in washing from the snmmer
boarders to pay the mterest on
the mortgage, and the first day
lost one of the diamonds in the suds
and tried to hang herself in the
barn, but the rope broke and she
fell on a 150 Jersey calt and broke
its back.
Senator Shannon and the Pistol Law.
We canuot believe that Senator
Bhannonwill ivsist on his billto res
peal the law that prohibits the car
rying of concea’ed weapons.
Such a law would simply give the
gtate over to disorder and violence,
when there is supreme need for
order andyeice. Tt would within
thirty dags arm every vicious ne
groin the state, and the careless
and impulsive of the white lace.
A pistol hidden in a hippocket
promotes more quarrels and raises
more strife than any other cause,
excepting liquor. Mix liquor and
a bidden pistol and human life is
hardly sate in their neighlor
hood.
Another Republican Scheme.
‘The Atlanta Constitution hes

two-thirds the size of Dawson, ad
«of nothing like the business in
portance, has a depot that, from
its deseription, would do rpodl
any town,” while Dawson, who
coutributes, perhaps twice s much
to the company’s coffers, is impos
ed upon and disfigured hy o depot
of which even the smallest statisg
might well be ashamed.
Is there justice in this?
Is there decency in it?
We would repeat our sugzess
tior, that the citizens subseribe
enough money to build and donate
to this clesefisted monopoly a
depot that would, at least, not
! disgrace our eity.
Bai Advice.
‘ Weare reliably informed that
some of leading negroes of this seca
i tion have been receiviig circulars,
| the nature of which are ealealated
to breed mischiet, In the circulars
the negroes are advised to form
companies, and with zuns to drill
according to the tactics in use hy
| the United States army. The eir
culars even go so far as to advise
the negro women to form them
geves into companics, and where
guns are not accessible to use
broomssticks, ete., for the purpose
ot learning the vse of arms. The
obvious meaninz of all this is
trouble. We can name one of the
wen who has recently reccivea
guch eirculars, but we have more
confidence in his eommon-ssense
than to believe that he would follow
such sdvice.—Leary Courier.
We believe the negroes of this
section are too sensible to pay any
attention to such advice, and we
dont apprehend uny trouble from
the above gource.
But there scems to be a dissatis
faction among the negroes throug!.-
out the south, gnd in th+ y crthern
part of the state they ave Lolding
meetings and discuseing the ques.
tion of colinization, They have
held severalmeetings ud petitioned
congress to give them a territory.
This idea of colinization is a
movement started by the negroes
themselves, and if they, or any por
tion of them, want to go into a
country of their own, where they
can govern themselves in their own
way with porfeet freedom, why not
afford them (e facilitics for doing
so? That the necro wants to be
independent of the white man is
evidenced by this colonizing scheme.
If they want a goverment and ter
ritory of their own, let's give it to
them, and then this everlasting
howl about ruce war, race eolor and
the race problem will be stopped
and solved.
The Men Who Eurt a Town.
The clags of mcn who hurt a
town are not those that brag cn
the town they came from. It
is the class that loaf around the
grocery stores when they shouid be
at work, and growl about the
weather, and curse the climate,
and run down the country, anq
slander the town when they should
be at home helping their wives
make a living. If astranger comes
into town to locate, tticse human
vultres are the first fel'ows he sees,
and it cold water will mske him
run, he will go. Such men gl Ways
hurt a town. They sit around and
growl and loai aud discourage every
goud thin s that is proposed for the
public, either in afinaceial, moral
or social way,
THE circus promises to be very
prominent in Georgia this winter.
Already two are billing the state.
