How We Grow.
Dawson has just rounded up ap
other month of progress. You
have only to takea ridethrovgh
our streets and avenues to be cons
vineed that the month waus not
spent in vain. We no longer
mote our progress by periods
of twelvemonths. We grow too
fast to wait and let the evidences ot
our prosperity accumulate As we
said very recently, hardly a week
passes that the ground is not broks
en for some new building. New ens
terpriecs and vew houses are spring
ing up every week. The suburbs
sre keeping pace with the city
proper, andall around us there
seems to be progress and prose
~ The croak of the croakeris heard
butlittle. The people are works
ing with an energy and enthusiasm
~which assures the continued up
building of our city. We are
‘Wakiog 00 vain boast when we as
eert that we believe that Dawson
is growing faster than any other
city in Bouthwest Georgin, Our
growth is not fictitious, but is of
that stable character that is born
-of ¢hp patural advantages that sur.
round us, avd the got-up and-get
disposition of our people.. This
faet is becoming known abroad,and
outside ecapital is sceking invest
ment here. We say let the good
work go on, ard all praise to
thoge who are pullivg and pushing
forward all the time,
Silly Biliy Kersh.
That ivflated picceof windy ege
tism, Editor Bil'y Kersh, of the
Fort Vulley Enterprise, got on his
cuc lnst week beeause we stated the
fact thut Dawson is a city of much
more importance, in every respest,
than Fort Valley. He strikes
back in an intensely windy article,
imended to show that the hamlet
in which he manipulates ‘the paste
pot and drives the quill is a real
large town, but which, oa the con
trery, shews that bie is sadly i need
of information.
While we would not for a mo
ancut elevate Fort Valley to a
comparison with Dawson, we wish
to give a few plain facts that
‘should set our friend at Fort Vale
ey aright.
‘ The Enterprise's first and most
|inexcusable claim i 3 that Tort
*\'aH(-y's manufactures out rank
‘]).-u\'snn’.-s three to one. We be
lieve that Fort Valley has in opers
|ation in her limits two manafics
!t-ll"ing establishments- a ginshop,
‘:Ilhl a foundry. Dawson has in
| #uccesaful and continual operation
o sash, blind and door factory, a
(hmndry. tn oil miil, a guano {ac
‘ tory, a varicty shop and two wacon
{and buggy manufactories. One of
iitln('sc euterpriscs emrloy seventy
five hands and does an annual bus
iness of $350,000 —more than all
the comined industries ot Fort
Valley. Dawson’s other six estabs
.lishments, named above, employ
from « dozen to twenty-five hands
each. The business of these en~
terprises prebably exceed the en
tire business of Fert Valley,
‘ Twelve thousand bales of eotton
|2o from hiere annually, and Fort
Valley tiiinks it a remarkably
good year when she gets halt that
{ number.
As to population, it is unncces
sary to contradict the statement
that Fort Valley has a few more
zouls than Dawson. The censue
of next year will give Dawson in
the reighborhood of 3,000 people,
and it Fort Valley scrapes together
1,800 she will wonderfully deceive
s,
No, Billy, the difference in Daws
.sm.’s and Fort Valley’s railroad
accommodations is due {0 the rot
ten partiality of the Central rails
road and not to the importance (?)
ofthe hamlet in which you live,

The Need of Watcrivorks. |
The big fire at the Central rail
road cotton yard on last Wednes.
day established beyond a doubt thie
great need of waterworks in this
city. The engine was unable to
play upon the fire more than a half
hour for lack of water, and the
property was left to the merey of
the flames.
Our whole water supply is inads
ejquate. More than half’ of the
city is without any protection
whatever, and what few cisterns
we have are without water the
greater part of the time.
If Wednesday’s fire had been in
the business part of the city the re~
sult would Lave been the same.
The water would have heen exs
hausted before the flames could
have been checked, aud the whole
city would have lieen in danger.
A first-class cystem of water.
‘works coutd be built here for less
than five thcusand dollars, and
could be made to jay for them
selves in a littde while. Many
families would be glad to avail
themselves of the convenience of
waterworks at a ressonable price,
and the revenue thus derived
would, in a few yeers, pay for the
waterworks and ever thercafter be
a souree of profit to the city.
Oux people, with few exceptions,
want waterwerks, Indeed, we
doubt if thereis @ man in Dawson
who has the interest ot the city at|
keart who would vote against them.
Our growing importance demand
waterworks,
- Tue Augusta News fears that
‘there will be a dearth of guberna
‘torial candidates in Ceorgia next
year. Noueed for'alarm. While
‘tig true that Mr. Northen will
have bicome bellowsed and will
lag in the race by then, there'l
be plenty of others who will sacri
fice themselves upon the “‘altar of

TerrrLy is the best all rouad
county in the state, and many new
citizens are coming to live with
us., We know of no less than
twentysfive strangers *who have
bought firms in Terrell’ this fall,
paying from $£12.50 to $2O per acre
jor them,
Colving it Themsclves.
While the people of the north
are ranting and teaing their shirts
sbout the negroes of the south, it
s refreshing 1o note that the ne
groes ot Terrell wre solving the
aquestion {or themselves, The ne
groes of this county are buying
homes and farms and are
setiling down to industiious and
useful Jives. They are growing
more respongible every year, and
there are mumbers of them who
now buy supplies from our mer
chants on their own account. Mr.
J. W. ¥ goten, Dawsou's largest
gupply merchant, tells the News
that fifieen years ago he so'd gonds
on time to ouly two neproes. This
year he has sold goods to s wany
as fitty on time. Messrs. Lowrey &
Orr have also sold liberaily on
ercdit to ne roes this vear. and so
have many other of onr mer
chants, Whenever tle negro bes
comes @ land owner he develops
into & good eitizon, respects the
white people avd gaing their re
gpect and friendship. Tt all the nes
croes would take a lesson from the
class mentioned in this article they
woull themselves solve the race
vrobleny arnd | work out their own
destiny.
Tue Fort Valley Euterprise 1w
inclined to be funny at the ex
pense of the number of habies born
in Dawson. Ouve of our greatest
editorial pleasures is to chronicle
weekly the arrival of two or three
thirteen pounders who some
day will buiid brick blocks or be
at the head of some big mannfact
uring enterprises in Dawson.
Dawson always has a weleome for
new citizens, no matter from
